RP: Homeless Kitten
Characters: Lily, Severus
Time/Date: Noon, Saturday September 3, 2023
Location: Spinner's End
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Lily moves in
Status: Complete

Lily was amazingly, impossibly, exhausted already. It was just before noon and she was doing a last check of the guest room for anything she'd forgotten. No one else was home (that she was aware of, at any rate), but they knew her plans for the day.

She did plan to go check in on Lily Luna after she'd gotten settled into Sev's place, but there wasn't anything she could do for the girl; she could simply offer support to Harry and his family.

After scribbling (another) note for Harry to let him know to get in touch with her if he needed her for anything at all, she took one last look around the house. It was good to be getting out, she assured herself. Good to leave Harry and his family to their lives. She knew she was welcome, and she deeply appreciated that he was being so supportive, but she couldn't stay here. She was only planning on staying with Sev until she got on her feet and could support herself.

By then she hoped she'd be ready to move on and start dating. She really did intend to remarry and start again ... eventually. Years down the road - it hurt too much to think of trying now.

Deciding she was as ready as she was going to be, she snagged the paper bag from the kitchen that contained the lunch she'd made, as promised. Sandwiches and a salad and iced tea in a thermos. Perhaps the last was a bit silly, but ... well, she was a bit silly.

Looking around one more time, she whispered a goodbye to the house before she turned on a heel and apparated to a place along the lane where Severus lived. Settling her bags, shifting her grip on them, Lily began the walk to his house. Soon to be her house. Once she reached the door, she freed up a hand to knock ... though she supposed he probably already knew she was there.

Severus had been up since dawn... which was hardly anything unusual as he generally rose at around dawn unless there was reason not to. It was probably one of the causes of the causes behind the persistent vampire rumours when he was a teacher though if that was the case the students in question needed to go back and study Defence Against the Dark Arts some more.

But his early rise today had allowed him to ensure the two spare rooms and the kitchen were clean and tidy. Lily could have her pick of the rooms, the other could be used for storage as far as he was concerned. It had been odd going into the back room even now. It had been his room as a child though he'd quickly moved into the larger front bedroom after his parents' deaths. That back bedroom held only bad memories for him and he tended to use that one for storage more than any other room.

After that was done it was simply a matter of waiting for Lily to arrive. He spent the time in the main room reading since he knew if he got caught up in brewing, he'd likely miss the sound of her knocking. The only other thing he'd done was lower some of the wards - the more inimical ones - about fifteen minutes before she was due to arrive. He'd raise them again once she was keyed into them.

When the knock came, he was already setting aside his book and heading for the door. The proximity wards had alerted him to the arrival of someone at his door.

He opened the door and smiled slightly. "Lily. Come in."

Lily sulked. "Whatever happened to calling out 'who's there?' I had an entire speech planned, mind you, about how I was a poor homeless kitten looking for a home," she began as she stepped in. "For a kind man to take me in. Granted, I could imagine you retorting with something along the lines of there being no kind men here, and then I would've pouted."

She paused. "So I suppose we're right where I planned for us to be, minus my adorably sad story."

After she'd crossed the threshold, she paused. "You do still have a chance to back out of this, if you've come to your senses yet? I promise I won't hold it against you," she assured him as her brows elevated.

Shifting her weight, she let one of her bags slip off her shoulder to land on the floor, and she regarded him with a hint of a grin hovering at the corners of her lips.

Severus gave her a look of restrained amusement. "You are making the assumption that I have enough people knocking on my door to warrant calling out 'who's there?'"

He arched an eyebrow at her then pulled out his wand and raised the wards again, making sure to weave Lily's magical signature into them so she would be able to not only pass through them but also raise and lower them if needed. "Does that answer your question about whether I have changed my mind?"

He paused for a moment then returned her grin with a small smile. "Welcome. I am afraid it has not changed much over the years. Other than me adding more books."

"That, my love, is hardly the point. The point is that you should have known I had a story all worked up for you and you at least could have done me the courtesy of playing along. Honestly, you men." She exhaled in mock exasperation before she grinned slyly to him.

She did shiver as she felt the wards, the way they rippled at her magic. It was an odd sensation, and she imagined she'd get used to it if she felt it every time she crossed through the door. "I suppose it's enough of an answer," she replied, chin elevating slightly.

Still nervous despite everything, she looked around. She'd get used to it, she knew, but it was just so ... surreal right now, and she was tempted to ask - again - if he was sure. But he'd made it clear enough, hadn't he?

Her recent correspondences with Remus flashed briefly through her mind as she tipped up her chin to study Severus before she shifted her eyes away. Well, no. He'd surely grown out of it. Grown past her, if there'd ever been anything there on his side at all.

"So right," she said, shaking out of whatever mood was threatening to grab at her now; she'd had enough melancholy and sorrow to last for a while. "Which room should I be picking?" Brows arched as she grinned to him.

Severus gave another start at the casual 'my love' then once again dismissed it as Lily just being Lily. He got his wayward thoughts firmly under control. Lily did not think of him in that way and had never thought of him in that way. Reality might be disappointing but it was always a far better place to live. Less in the way of disappointment. "I shall try to do better next time," he said dryly.

He gestured towards the stairs and started up them, assuming she would follow. "You may have your choice of two bedrooms." He paused at the top of the stairs and pointed to the half-closed door that led to his room then to the bathroom door. "That is my bedroom. That is the bathroom. You may use the room here next to my own or the one at the back."

He made no mention of the back bedroom once being his or that he'd much prefer her to take the room next to his own. That thought was fraught with trouble but how could he protect her if he didn't know where she was. He did make a mental note to check the silencing charms on his room. He would rather she did not hear his nightmares... or anything else he might be doing.

She nodded to his promise to do better next time. "Good. I'll hold you to that." Following along with him, she peered curiously into the room closest to his before she drifted down the hall to peer into the other one. She wondered if it mattered to him which one she had.

"Suppose I could take this one back here," she began as she stepped into it. "Then the dogs will have a straight shot for the stairs when it's time to go out," she said before she turned to face him, trying so very, very hard to keep a straight face. "I did mention, didn't I? That I'd gotten dogs? Two great big slobbery things ..."

She bit down on her lower lip, snorting back the giggle before she shook her head. The other room seemed larger (or was laid out better), and she rather (foolishly) fancied the idea of him walking by it on the way to his own room.

Lily did attempt to peek, not at all discretely, at what she could see of his room through the half-open door before she nodded toward the bedroom she'd chosen. Stepping into it, she settled her bags just inside the door, belatedly recalling she'd brought food. "Lunch," she said as she held up the paper sack. "I did promise."

Severus was amused by the mention of dogs. He didn't believe a word of it though and he raised an eyebrow. "Indeed?" he said archly though he was openly amused. "I've heard dogs possess many useful potion ingredients. It will be interesting to find out if that is true."

He noticed her attempt to peek into his room and while he made no move to stop her, he didn't precisely encourage her either. Mostly it was the... discomfort the idea of having her in there would produce and the impossible ideas it would spawn and it was best to avoid that turmoil if at all possible. Not that there was anything incriminating in there. Other than his bed, his clothes and his books, the only things of any sentimental value were the two framed photographs on his bedside table - one of his mother and one of he and Lily at fourteen. It was probably the last good photograph taken of them before everything went to hell. A reminder of better days, he supposed.

He gave a small half smile. "Ah, lunch. I believe I remember what that is. It's been a while since I've eaten lunch."

Lily laughed aloud. "Oh, but you wouldn't find out on my dogs," she protested. "Wouldn't they have guest privileges by virtue of being part of the package of me? You wouldn't see what sort of fun potion ingredients I contained, would you?"

She grinned, a little more amused than she should have been. "What about cats and owls? Do they have useful ingredients, or would one be safe if I brought one in? I'm not using your owl. The bastard tried to bite me the first time you sent a letter."

She paused. "I'd probably end up plucking him and serving him up for dinner."

Rolling her shoulders, she glanced at the room again. It, she thought, would do just fine. For now. By the time she'd annoyed him to the point he was reconsidering his offer, she should be ready to stand on her own in the new world.

With a nod and a grin to his comments about lunch, Lily headed back downstairs to get lunch set in the kitchen.
