RP: Explanations
Characters: Lily, Dorcas
Time/Date: September 2, 2023
Location: Near St Mungo's
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Lily tries to explain
Status: Complete

Lily closed her eyes and closed the journal, and belatedly wondered how Cas had even gotten one. It didn't seem terribly relevant at the moment though; maybe she'd borrowed someone's. Leaving a note for Harry (or Jamie or Ginny) to let whoever found it know where she was going and what was going on, Lily gathered up a few things she thought she might need - a small sack of galleons and some food, as well as a set of Muggle clothes.

With everything else on her mind, she didn't think of the sense (or lack thereof) behind the things she gathered.

Once she had everything, she apparated to a place near the hospital and glanced around. Shifting the bag on her arm, she slipped her wand up her sleeve as she looked around for alleys near the hospital - or Dorcas herself.

"Cas?" she called softly when she saw someone who resembled her friend.

Cas turned to the voice, sighing in relief when she caught sight of Lily. The past five minutes had consisted of a mounting panic attack, crescendoing in blindly writing in a book she had found in a box in the alley, blindly hoping it was charmed. She remembered locking her office, saying goodnight to those on shift, and heading out of the building into the dusky July evening. She remembered crossing the street, and then, suddenly, she had woken up in an alley. Alone. With no idea what had happened.

Lucky for her, the book had been a journal, and Lily had seen her rather pathetic excuse for an entry. She seemed to know what was going on.

"Lily! What the devil's going on?" Cas responded, panic evident in her voice.

"It's ... it'll be all right," she said, stepping toward Cas and embracing her briefly. "Oh, lord you have no idea how good it is to see you right now," she whispered before she released her friend. She pushed back some of Cas' hair, desperate to know how old she was but uncertain she wanted to hear the answer. She at least looked out of school, and that was a moderate relief.

"I'm ... probably not the best person to explain it to you, but ... it's not when you think it is, and it's only a freakish streak of chance that I'm here at all," she began before holding out a hand for her friend. "We'll go somewhere and talk. Are you hungry?" It ... seemed like such a mundane question, but Lily really didn't want to launch into the 'it's forty or so years into the future and you died' explanation out here in the street.

Cas hugged her friend back, grateful for the familiar face. She looked somewhat different from when Cas had last seen her, but that might have only been the light or a trick of the eye. "It can't be as good as it is to see you. I've completely lost my bearings and I woke up with bruises that I can't explain. I swear, I haven't been out on a bender and I'm not going loony."

Taking Lily's hand, Cas caught her breath before speaking again. "You're as good a person as any to explain it. Though, if freakish chance is involved, it doesn't sound like anyone can really truly explain the why of it. " She worried at her bottom lip. "I'm starving, actually. I got wrapped up and forgot to grab lunch today."

Lily nodded and glanced around. She had a bit of Muggle money, and she reasoned it should be enough for tea things at least. "No, they can't explain ... everything. Anything, really," she admitted as she led Cas along the street until she found a cafe.

Ducking inside, she tugged her toward a table before offering her a menu and settling into a seat. "A lot of what I'm going to tell you is going to be completely unbelievable, but it's all true." Lily exhaled softly. "It's two-thousand twenty-three right now. September second. We ... some people who died have somehow been resurrected into this time, where we died but not always at the age we died."

Lily hesitated, but Cas would understand. "James ... James is sixteen. They've got him back at school. Sirius is sixteen. Remus is seventeen. They're all ... in school, and I thought ... I'd be utterly alone in this. I'm twenty-one right now. Was that old when I was killed."

Cas stared blankly at Lily for a moment, trying to understand exactly what she had just been told. 2023, and people were back from the dead. And lots of people she knew who were older than her, were now younger. And Lily was twenty-one. And they were dead. And Lily had been killed. And ... oh, Merlin.

Her mouth hung open for a moment while she tried to force words out. "So, you're dead? Or, were? And I was too? And James and Sirius and Remus? We're all dead? Were dead? I don't even know what tense is appropriate, but ... dead? As in, war casualties? And it's ... it's 2023. I should be 63, but I'm here, alive, and twenty. Not dead, in an alleyway, in a puddle." Cas exhaled shakily. "At least it wasn't a run in with a cauldron," she added, trying to make light of things. "Wait, how did you die? And, how did I die?"

"Were dead. We ... James and I were killed." She licked her lips and exhaled before she flagged a passing staff member so they could order something. Once their orders had been placed, she continued. "We were killed because of some bloody prophecy and Peter's betrayal. We were in hiding, us and our son, Harry. Voldemort found us because Peter betrayed us. He killed James, and then me, but when he tried to kill Harry the ... the spell bounced back at him and nearly killed Voldemort. I wish it had," she murmured, but that was a rather moot point.

"We weren't all ... strictly speaking, war casualties. Remus and his wife were killed in 1998, in a battle inside of Hogwarts. Sirius was killed in a smaller skirmish in 1995. I'm not ... sure exactly how or when you died. We ... didn't hear much about anything after we were in hiding. We had to keep a very low profile. We knew there was fighting, and dying, but ..." she reached out to take her friend's hand, squeezing it softly. "But I'm sorry, I don't know exactly how." She wondered if Severus would know.

"We're not the only ones who've come back, wrong ages or otherwise. Severus is back, and he's 38. Albus Dumbledore is back and I ... honestly don't know how old he is, but younger than we knew him, significantly so. Fenrir Greyback is back and the Prophet thinks he's already found a pack, or gotten his old one together. There was ... there was a mess in a little village."

She hesitated. "Bellatrix returned just ... just last night. She ..." Lily looked away, biting her lower lip. "She cast something at my granddaughter. She's still in the infirmary right now, at school."

Dead, and Lily didn't know how. Dead. That was going to take some time to adjust to. It wasn't that she hadn't acknowledged the possibility of dying in a war; it was that she had never adjusted to the idea of it. She remembered Emma's funeral, and the grief, and the heartache, and couldn't imagine it all happening for her.

Cas sat listening, dumbfounded. The war had gone on; it had taken Lily and James and then kept going. Remus and his wife, which was a strange enough thought on its own, and Sirius. And Peter was a traitor. Lily and James were dead, and so was she. She swallowed, trying to keep her composure. The most disturbing facet by far, though, was the fact that Hogwarts, the safe haven of her youth, was no longer safe. In fact, it seemed that Hogwarts had not been safe for some time.

Greyback. The name made Cas's shoulders hunch. She didn't like the idea of him being back, especially since it meant he had been dead. It would figure that whatever force brought the people she was fond of back, would resurrect Fenrir Greyback.

She inhaled sharply at the news of the attack. "Lord, Lily, is she alright? Do they know what that ... that thing hit her with?"

Lily watched Cas' face. "It's a lot to take in, I know. I've only been back a couple of weeks and I'm still not completely adjusted."

Shifting her eyes away, she shook her head. "I haven't heard of any changes. The healer, the Defense professor, and Severus were all looking at her, but if anything's changed, no one's told me yet." She hesitated. "Bellatrix slipped out. They haven't been able to track her down yet. So she and Greyback and who knows who else are ... out there."

Lily didn't want to say - or think - that it was like the war all over again, but that feeling was starting to creep back over her.

Cas bit her lip, and eyed the table. "Merlin. She's at least stable, yeah? And conscious?" She asked. "Should I expect to go careening back into war mode at any moment? What, with Greyback and Lestrange and who knows who else running about? I don't want to be caught unawares and killed ... again. I'm willing to wager it wasn't pleasant the first time."

"Stable. She wasn't conscious when Harry chased me out last night." She imagined it was the same right now, but she wasn't going to say anything that might jinx it, or worry Dorcas further.

"I don't know. I don't think so. There's no figurehead, no climate for it. Not yet, anyway. I ... there are bad people, but there've always been bad people, and at least the Aurors and the Hits know to look out for them."

Which didn't mean it couldn't brew into a war, but Lily thought they'd have warning and time to prepare if that was the case.

"So," she began, moving her hands off the table as their food was delivered. "So you'll have to go get reregistered at the Ministry. They'll ask you a thousand questions, over and over, but at least they're working on putting together a program to help people who don't have family to help them out, or friends to rely on."

Cas moved her hands out of the way as the waiter set down her plate. She ran her fingers along the edge, enjoying its warmth. She followed Lily's words calmly, until the Ministry came up. "Oh, bloody hell, Lily. Not them. Please, not them. Almost anyone, but them. I will go sell my ... probably outdated healing services on the black market, but not the Ministry. Who's the Minister now, anyway? Some overpaid bloke with jowls?"

"His name's Kingsley Shacklebolt, and he went through the second war. He's a good man and you wouldn't actually be dealing with him, anyway. But you do have to go in," Lily encouraged. "I'll go with you, if you'd like."

Pouring herself some tea, she stirred in a little honey before she took a sip of it. "It ... the Ministry's better now than it was in our day. They did a lot of reform and changes, and while it's still far from perfect, it's better."

"You'll have to come; who else will ensure that I don't get myself arrested for giving a bad show?" She teased. "He's a good man, eh? Well, I'll try to be nice to his underlings, then. Really. "

Taking a sip of her water, Cas settled back against the seat. "Who else is here?"

Lily nodded her agreement; she had no problem accompanying her friend. It would help keep her mind off of LilyLuna. "I'm sure they'll appreciate your efforts," Lily teased gently.

"Aside from those I mentioned already ..." Lily looked thoughtful. "There was a young girl, Ariana Dumbledore. Professor Dumbledore's younger sister." She hesitated again and realized her next bit of news probably wouldn't go over well, because Cas didn't know.

"I'm moving in with Severus, tomorrow," she said. "He ... he wound up spying on the Death Eaters for the Order. Harry - my son - cleared his name once the war was over."

"They'd do well to! D'you realize what an effort it takes to keep myself in line? Honestly, it's a wonder I survived as long as I did. However long that ended up being. Sometime before you, I suppose." Dead. That was never going to get old. Cas supposed that was the shock setting in.

The shock that was quickly displaced by Lily's announcement. "I ... you're ... he's ... what? Since when? That Harry you mentioned is your son? How old is he? Who raised him? You're moving in with Severus? Does --- right, he doesn't need to. Well. at least there's some ... good ... in this?"

Lily smiled gently. "It's ... a bit of a long story, I suppose, but after James came back at ... at sixteen." She shook her head. "I couldn't ... we're not going to work, not with him that young and a five year gap." Lily dropped her eyes. "At least he doesn't remember, so he's not likely to be haunted by memories of us.

"Anyway, I was staying with Harry - he's forty-three, all grown up - and he's living in the house in Godric's Hollow. The one James and I lived in. So ..." She trailed off, trusting Cas to understand.

"Tuney raised Harry, but he turned out all right despite her. Love, he was hunted all through school by Voldemort's followers, then Voldemort himself after Voldemort's body was restored. He had a hard time of it before he managed to bring him down in '98."

Lily shrugged slightly. "It's ... a complicated situation, this coming back thing. We just have to try to make the best of it."

"Well ... alright then. I suppose if you're happy, that's ace; compared to some other news, this is actually fairly easy to understand. I can't believe he worked against You Know Who, though. I never would have expected it from him," Cas said, not unkindly. "As for your son, who is older than you and I put together, the poor dear! That's a terrible way to have come up. It was bad enough fighting at eighteen; I can't imagine starting in the middle of schooling."

If she was happy. Lily still had moments when she wondered if she'd ever truly be happy again. But she was coping, distracting herself with this, that, and the other thing. "It's ... he's helping. Just by being around and remembering me." A half-smile quirked her lips. "Though now I've got you to remember me, too."

Lily nodded. "He did well though. He had a good support network. Molly's youngest son was one of his best mates, and they had a Muggleborn witch." She paused. "Frank and Alice's boy, too, was part of their group of friends. He's actually a professor at the school now. Harry's the head of Aurors, if you can even believe that."

"And I remember most of you too! I'm from July of 1980, so, there's not too much I don't know about. Maybe a year or so that you have to fill me in on, but even then, it's only part of a year, because I'm dead sometime in there."

"Are Frank and Alice here too? In some form? And, that's ace! At least he had good friends. Lily, I am completely unsurprised that your son grew up to be the head of the Aurors. With you and James for parents, how could he grow up to be anything less than marvelous?"

July of 1980. She had to laugh a little. "So just before Harry was born. He was born at the end of the month. James and I were killed on Halloween of 1981."

Lily shook her head. "They ... ah." She shifted uncomfortably. "The Lestranges and a few of their friends tortured the Longbottoms. They ... they're in a permanent ward, in the hospital. Completely out of their minds. No recognition of anything, and no hope of a reversal or cure, from what Harry's told me."

"So, I did get to see him as a baby? At some point?" Cas asked. Mentally, she swore at the bad timing of whatever had brought her here. "Halloween of 1981 ... good Lord, Lily. Good Lord."

Cas squirmed uncomfortably in her seat. "A permanent ward? My god. Frank and Alice on a permanent ward with no hope of recover. Alice was pregnant too; what happened to her son between his parents being tortured and meeting Harry?"

"You did," Lily assured her with a soft smile. "We snuck him out for a bit to show him around the Order before we were shuffled back into hiding." She nodded slightly, sadly. "We were ... foolish. Cocky. Neither of us had our wands when he came in, but ... I'm not sure it would have made any difference if we'd had them."

Though at least she could have gotten away. There wouldn't have been a hope for James, but... well, it didn't matter, now. It was over.

"Neville. Augusta raised him. Poor dear had such confidence problems his first few years, but Harry said he really came into his own near the end. I don't blame him a bit; I think I might've had nightmares if she'd raised me."

"It likely wouldn't've. He seemed indestructible. Nothing ever did any damage." Cas tried not to think about her friends' last moments, or Alice and Frank's ghastly fate. Her mind drifted back to the alleyway, and she briefly pondered her own demise at the hands of whomever. It wasn't a pleasant thought, but at least it hadn't been a run in with the toaster or a cauldron; that would have simply been embarrassing.

"From the name alone, I'd have nightmares if she'd raised me. Poor Neville."

She chuckled softly before she leaned back in her chair. It was amazing, honestly, to have Cas around. She still had to go check in on LilyLu and see if there were changes, and finish packing to move her things to Sev. She wanted to make dinner for Harry and Jamie - she couldn't imagine Ginny was coming home until Lily was better.

"Things got better, after Voldemort fell. It's been quiet, up until recently ..." Lily wondered - and worried - that the world had gotten a little soft. But if the returning trend kept up, they were getting a lot of first-war soldiers into the mix.

People who knew. People who could fight. People who could teach.

"The Wizarding World? Quiet? Has that even ever happened before?" Cas joked. "We've always got something wrong. Surely, the damn goblins have to be at war again. It'd only be their ... 447th time. I'm sure they have lots of new ways to get at each other! Or, if not a goblin war, there has to be some nutter running about proclaiming that the resurrection of the dead is a sign of the apocalypse or something along those lines. We're the Wizarding World; something's always supposed to be afoot."

Lily grinned. "Well, nothing yet. Harry said it's been fairly quiet since the end of the war, once they got the Death Eaters all rounded up. Just the normal rush of criminals and thugs and normal crimes, but no rampaging dark lords or anything of that sort."

Granted, now they'd have a werewolf problem, not to mention whatever else came back from the dead.

Sighing softly, she half-closed her eyes before she shook her head. "It does seem like a fair bit of the Order's coming back though; maybe that's a sign of something."

"The Ministry has a little fund set up, employment aid and the like. Or they're working on it. I was one of the first ones back, so I was lucky I had Harry to fall back on. Whatever you had in your vault should still be there," she suggested. "I've got a few applications out to places in Diagon. Bookstores and apothecaries and the like. I'm going to be brushing up on potions and charms and hopefully venturing somewhere down that route once I'm up to speed. Sev mentioned opening an apothecary; if he follows through with that, I imagine I'll be working for him."

Lily looked thoughtful. "There's certainly no harm in heading back to the hospital, explaining that you used to work there, and ... seeing if they can catch you up and you can get something like your old job back."

"It's worth a try, I suppose. I mean, I'm sure my records are still there and I've got my ID card if that fails. What's the worst they can tell me? No?" Cas didn't want to consider that possibility; she loved her job, and what more, was good at it. It had been the only career she could seriously think about from the time she was eight. She'd rather live destitute than go into retail, even if it was books. She had worked too hard to simply give up on it, even if it meant going back through basic training.

"I'm sure they'll let you in. Possibly after a few months of retraining - a lot happened in forty years. They've made amazing advances in potions and there's even one for werewolves, to help them keep their minds on the full moon. I'm going to give it a go and see if I can learn to make it, though it's difficult. Or so they say."

She shook her head. "Besides, I'm sure they still need people willing to work in that ward, right? The Ministry's being very good about trying to make the transitions easier for ... for people like us. The formerly deceased."

"Formerly deceased ... too bad I didn't have aspirations to be a zombie; this would have been close to a success," Cas grinned half-heartedly. "But what about this potion? Difficult or not, it sounds like a pretty major bump in quality of life for those with lycanthropy. Theoretically, it sounds like it could reduce virtually all self-inflicted injuries as you'd be ... well ... you!"

She nodded. "There's a werewolf at the school who's been on it, and ... well, of course ..." she trailed off. It wasn't incredibly likely that Dorcas knew about Remus, was it? But it wasn't a secret, anymore, was it? "Remus, is ... he had it this past full. He said it really did make a difference."

Reaching out, she squeezed Cas' hand again. "I'm sure they will, love. It might take a bit, but I'm sure they'll let you in again and you can be queen of the ward once more," she teased lightly.

Good lord, that was morbid. Lily shook her head slightly as she pushed back from the table. They could likely just pop over to the Ministry from one of the alleyways nearby.

After taking care of the bill, she smiled over to Cas. "Let's be on our way then."

Cas grinned at Lily. "I'll owe you for dinner later. "

The thought of seeing her own grave both disturbed and amused Cas. On one hand, it cemented the notion that she was, at one point, dead. Being dead was not quite something she had yet come to terms with, let alone that some form of her was two meters underground. On the other, at this point in time, she was weirdly gloriously alive and young. There was no war and her particular fate had been, for the time being, circumvented. She was free to poke fun at the choice of epitaph, talk to her dead self, and marvel at the wondrous blue sky of being alive. It also left her free to find someone who remembered her funeral, and ensure her last wishes for butterbeer and firewhiskey all around had been followed.

"After you," she said. "I'd simply get us lost. "

"Surely you know where the Ministry is? It hasn't moved," Lily teased lightly. "Thought we'd just apparate there," she explained. "Then, once I get you in I will leave you in their capable hands. I'm not sure how streamlined the process has become, but it shouldn't take more than a few hours. I've got to go check on Harry and Lily and finish packing up my things, but once they're done with you, I can come get you and we'll go from there. Figure out where they're putting you up and all that."

She did feel sort of bad for 'ditching' Dorcas, but once she got through the Ministry's doors, there wouldn't be much for Lily to do but sit and wait, and she did have things to do today.

"Lily, I suspect I could get lost in Hogsmeade at this point; it took me an embarrassing length of time to realize where I was. Apparating seems to be the best solution. " Cas wasn't wild about spending the next few hours with some Ministry employee, but it wasn't like she had other options at her disposal. Besides, Lily had things to do, and everyone else was either too young or still dead; there was no one else to talk to.

"Sounds good. Here's hoping all goes well,"
