Doreen honestly was headed for the Danger Room. She wanted to go help save the day, she wanted it so badly she was practically vibrating, but she knew it was important to follow the rules in an emergency. The best way she could help the teams was to get herself to safety and let them focus on the monsters. It didn't feel like helping, she didn't like it, but she did understand it. She was following the emergency lights toward the Danger Room with a group of other kids, her tail twitching anxiously behind her, not running toward the sounds of battle.
And then they came around a corner, and one of the monsters was right there.
Okay, she could have gone back the other way. That was what all the other kids did, as fast as they possibly could. But Doreen only had so much willpower, and the monster was right there, and there was nobody actually fighting it right this second. Somebody needed to be fighting it, right? If there wasn't a team member around to fight it, then somebody else needed to do it. Right? Right.
A little too quickly to really be able to say she'd thought it through, Doreen launched herself forward in a powerful leap, her short claws latching onto one of the monster's legs. Once she had her claws in, it couldn't shake her off. At least, not right away. It actually seemed a little bit confused by her approach, enough that it was reacting less like it was being attacked, and more like it had gotten something stuck to its foot. Not very dignified, but that was fine by Doreen.
It gave her all the time she needed to start biting the monster's leg.
