LET'S GO SURFING ON THIS CLOUD, IT'S ALL JUST MILK AND HONEY.
Alex hesitated at the door to his girlfriend’s room, not because he was uncertain about entering, but because he didn’t know how to free up his hands. He’d sneaked his way from Lorna’s bed as the sun rose, placing the gentlest of kisses on her forehead before throwing on some clothes as quietly as possible, and then padding out of the room barefoot. It wasn’t Valentine’s Day yet but it was close enough and besides, who needed to wait for a special day before doing something romantic? Not this guy. And certainly not when his better half had been through such a difficult time lately, was still going through it. Alex couldn’t pretend he was able to fully understand the darkness Lorna was battling against inside her head, but he did know he wanted to do anything he could to help her punch through this and emerge on the other side. He wanted to help her feel better. He wanted to make her smile again.
And so it was that the idea of bringing her breakfast in bed had wormed its way into his skull and driven him out into the halls of the school as soon as he saw shards of sunlight beginning to warm the glass of the window. Hardly anyone had been around this early so he’d had his pick of breakfast items in the kitchen. There’d been some deliberation before he’d settled on adding a little of everything to the wide tray he’d found. Lorna was going to need all her battle-hardened reflexes to snag the plate of bacon before Alex devoured it though, sorry.
But now he was hovering outside her room, trying to come up with a way of fishing the passkey from his pocket and using it to grant himself access, while simultaneously not dropping the unnecessarily heavy tray. Hrm. Glancing back and forth for inspiration, he found it in a nearby side table being used to hold a display of flowers to brighten up the hall. That’d do the trick. Balancing the corner of the tray on the table freed up a hand, solving his problem. Before waving his passkey at the electronic lock, a grin touched his lips and he wobbled back over to the flowers, plucking a couple of them free and laying them amid the breakfast foods. The finishing touch.
Finally able to step back into Lorna’s quarters, Alex ducked his head around the door, his hair still messy from when his head had been laid on the pillow beside her. “Hey,” he said softly, voice low to match the hush of the early hour. “Brought you something.” Twisting his torso around the door to make sure it didn’t catch on the tray and topple the scavenged breakfast, he let it shut behind him and made his way over to the bed. “Hope you’re hungry.” Maybe this would start her day off right, set the scene for the good day to follow. That was all he wanted. For Lorna to have a good day. She’d had far too many bad ones.
