Benji didn't know what to do and it was the worst. He wanted to help, but the adults had it handled. He wanted to comfort the other students, but there were definitely more capable ones who could bring a calming presence (even without their mutations). He wanted to call his mom, but he knew that would just worry her even more. And so Benji, involuntary shapeshifter, couldn't even hide as someone else since the best he could do right now was hair or eyes or noses, but never all at once. Sometimes his voice changed a little, but he couldn't tell if that was some delayed puberty kicking in or the girl he passed in the hallway. So, Benji just listened. He nodded appropriately when other students voiced their concerns. He panicked quietly in his own room. He worried excessively for his classmates who had life-threatening mutations if stolen away, and how he couldn't do anything to help them. It felt overwhelming to be this small during something this terrifying. And even now, if he wanted to help, how would he manage? Shapeshifting was completely unhelpful during his day-to-day, and now without, Benji was just taking up space. A horrible thought of why are they even bothering to take me crawled into his mind. But he shooed it away. He was over those things, and there was no reason for it. He could be useful in some other way. But now there was no chance of staying. They were moving the kids (and he was one of the kids) out to the safehouse. His new home might not even exist in the next few hours, let alone days, and Benji was suddenly shorting out. He didn't know what to take, and should he pack at all? Was he overreacting? Was he underreacting? His abilities didn't affect his ability to function (actually it made things easier on his behalf, none of that accidental morphing and pissing people off, which he tried to avoid at all costs) so would he be last to go? And what about his friends? Were they going to leave now too? What about... Even though his door was open there was a knock, and when he spun around—probably too quickly, too alarmed, too high strung—there was Nathaniel. Was it just last week that he had asked him to the dance? Benji had been panicking about making sure he hadn't overstepped his boundaries with Nathaniel, that he had wasted so much time not hanging out with him. Now they had to worry if something was going to kill them. If they might never have their powers back. He wondered if Nathaniel was happy about that fact. Benji swallowed. "Hi. I'm just... I don't know what to bring. " His attention went to Nathaniel's gloves, still on. Benji should have known, Nathaniel was always so together, never taking a chance with his powers even when most people had barely functioning ones. Benji wanted to remark on it, but he refrained. "Are we supposed to bring anything? |
