Millicent blinked, fairly sure she'd heard wrong. 'Wait, what?' she asked, looking from one to the other until what he was saying had sunk in.
'So let me see if I get this straight.' She got up from the sofa, holding the certificate of marriage in her hand. 'You got drunk - and married - and are now trying to get the whole thing annulled?' she asked, her voice surprisingly calm even as she approached Miles.
'So Liam, who now thinks he has a new baby brother, and an extra mummy, will have to be told that, no, indeed he does not. Because his father fucked up and left the contract out for him to see??' she snapped.
'Miles, for fucks sake, haven't I told you not to do these things?' she exclaimed. 'I'm not even going to start on the marriage itself, as that is your bloody business, but I fucking told you about child-friendly heights. Why, oh why, did you have to go and put this in a place where the kids could find it if you weren't intending to stay married?' she asked, waiving the paper in his face. 'Seriously, do you never think?'
Frustrated and annoyed she turned her back, trying to calm down, to calm her voice. 'How long are you going to keep messing with that boy's head? First you take him away from everyone he loves, then gives him back, then prance women around him so he doesn't know what to call them or what they are to him.' She sighed. 'And now you just gave him an extra mummy, and a baby brother, who you'll proceed to taking away from him again.'
'Fucking hell Miles, I told you not to introduce any women to him until you were ready to settle down with one!'
'And sorry Daphne, I'm in no way angry at you,' she added in a surprisingly nice tone as she looked at Daphne. 'Nigel is sleeping upstairs if you want to check on him. Really you can't be held responsible for his being an idiot and leaving the papers out for them to see. I can only offer my condolences on the marriage.'
