Summary: Millicent, Justin and Ella move on with their lives – and get the fresh start they need.
Millicent had never been very comfortable with the dark, it reminded her too much of her past. Yet with Justin's hands covering her eyes, she felt…safe. She could even smile at the way Ella was bouncing at their side.
'Almost there,' Justin said softly, and a shiver of warmth ran down her spine at the softness of his voice. Sometimes she could not really believe he was still there. Still hers. That he wasn't going anywhere.
'Come on, daddy, show her now!!!' Ella squealed, and behind her, Millicent could hear Justin's soft chuckle before he removed his hands.
'You can open your eyes now,' he said.
The sight that met her when she did was enough to make Millicent gasp. The house in front of her was perfect! Looking back at Justin, she wondered how such gentle hands could be so strong, how he could at once caress her so gently and make the wood bend to his will to make something so fantastic.
She laughed, tears in her eyes as she turned back to look at the house. So pretty, so perfect.
'Come on, mummy!' Ella said impatiently, rushing up the front steps. Millicent was still amazed that she would now live at a house with front steps at all. It was so much bigger than the flat. And the garden would be beautiful with a little work, she could already picture it in her mind.
'Go on, it's ours,' Justin prodded, and with that she nervously opened the door, finding herself loosing her breath when she saw the interior.
'It's not much yet,' Justin said. 'But it will be. We'll need new furniture of course – more of them. But I think we can manage that.'
Millicent barely listened; instead she looked around – from the living room which was the first room she entered, to the kitchen and dining area just past the stairs and the downstairs bathroom.
'How many rooms upstairs?' she asked quietly, running a hand along the fresh smelling wood as she took the first step on her way up.
'Three,' Justin and Ella answered at once. Millicent winced only a little bit when she thought of the one the third room had been meant for. As if he read her mind, Justin came up behind her, his strong hands on her shoulders as he kissed her temple. 'For Liam when he stays over,' he said warmly, and right then she was grateful for this half truth. They both knew why Justin planned for three rooms, but the thought of one for Liam was nice, and for now she let herself hang onto that.
There would be a baby eventually. She knew it. Felt it in her heart. She just needed to heal completely first. As she stepped out onto the landing, and saw her and Justin's bedroom through the open door, light flooding in through the generous window, Millicent knew that this would be it. The place she could finally move on, where the shadows of her past would vanish with time. Here Troy would not be able to haunt her; here she could deal with the loss of her child until she was ready to try for another. Here she could move away from every part of her past she did not like to be reminded of. In this room, in this house, with Justin and Ella by her side, she felt like she could conquer the world. Or maybe just her own small world.
But to Millicent, that was more than enough.
