'Both?' Cass answered, not sure himself. 'I never really wanted to be a dad, I can't see myself being good at it and kids... Well kids deserve good parents. That put aside, I guess what gets me the most is that she doesn't seem to care about him.' He thought about it, and yes, that did bother him more.
'She wrote simply to tell me that she's dumping him on me. Which to me... How can a mother do something like that? I don't even know the child, and she's just sending him to live with me? A complete stranger as far as the boy is concerned?'
Ok, so that bothered him a lot more than he'd thought. But really, kids should have good responsible parents. He didn't think he was one, but at least he had enough sense to realise that you didn't send your six year old to a stranger to live just like that.
'Anyway,' he said, pushing that thought aside. 'Percy got into his head that if I messed up once... you get the rest.' He made a face. 'I'm sure there is nothing, but he wants me to try and get the records of magical births, or access to them rather. To see if there are any more children that I should know about out there.'
'You're friends with Lupin right?' he asked. 'It's Hogwarts or the Ministry, and I'd rather not crawl for the wicked witch if I can help it. I was hoping you'd talk to Lupin for me.'
Harry looked a bit surprised, but still nodded and agreed. Relieved - and at the same time a bit wary - Cass took a sip of his drink. He looked up, seeing Percy alone and knowing he should not linger.
'Thanks mate, I'll talk to you later,' he said, patting Harry on the shoulder as he left.
