Fenrir watched the wolves in the pen for a moment then lowered his head and closed his jaws gently around Natasha's throat. He worried it gently, not breaking the skin, then let her go. He raised his head again then howled once more.
The wolves in the pen shifted and shied, some coming closer with hints of longing in their eyes and others backing away, either through fear or confusion. Fenrir stepped closer to the warded pen until his nose was almost but not quite touching the wards. He met the eyes of those who were edging closer and let them see the intelligence in his eyes, let them see that he was no mere beast but a thinking creature. He knew there was no guarantee that any of them would remember this once they were human but with any luck a few would remember just enough.
He raised his head and howled for the third time then turned sharply and loped away. Lupin's mate had evaded them and the wolves had seen what they could be if they wished, now he wanted some fun. There were several apparition points around Hogsmeade guarded by Aurors. Soon there would be several apparition points around Hogsmeade not guarded by dead Aurors.
