Summary: Rodolphus is coping plotting his next move.
The pain seemed interminable. Rodolphus was probably just as surprised as his wife had been when he did manage to revive after losing so much blood. So much blood, oh, and an arm. He was still coming to terms with that loss, and the thought of an unsuccessful battle was still at the forefront of his mind. Down, but not out.
How could he describe the pain? A part of him knew his arm should still be there, but every time he unconsciously went to move it, there was nothing – nothing but a blinding hot pain from the ghastly stump that was once his right arm. His mood was tempestuous, to say the least, and such a loss, as unexpected as it was, was far worse than he ever could imagine.
Bellatrix did not need the stress of this. As much as he didn't want to show any helplessness, his temper and his frustration grew when he couldn't do what he had always taken for granted his whole life. How was he expected to fight? His sword was all but a toy now. His magic? Well, he still had his left hand, and it was only a small mercy that he could wield his wand with it. He had tried, but he was still too weak to do anything more than the simplest of childish spells.
The painkilling potions and blood replenishing potions Orla had left did only so much to heal the body. The arm would never regrow, and now Rodolphus was ever so slowly coming to terms with that loss. He was tired of the bed rest; tired of not being able to do what he wanted, and most of all, he was tired of this damn conflict. They needed a stunning victory, and soon, if they were to end this.
He never got a chance to see the face of his attacker, and he cursed himself for his blind sightedness from the battle. When he found out their, he was going to do more than just kill them. A lifetime of endless suffering seemed to be not enough, and he had far too much time to think of more ingenious ways to make that happen. Bella's thoughts on the matter seemed to mirror his own. The only small mercy was that he was alive. Alive, and any of his detractors were going to see a more hardened and resolved Rodolphus. But the thought of his children was the one thing that got him through each day. He would live to hold them; to teach them when they were grown, and to prove to the world that you could not keep a Lestrange down for long.
This situation was merely a setback. Granted, the fact he now had a permanent wound that he could not hide was going to mean they had to work harder to maintain their roles as leaders, but Rodolphus knew that was merely a small hitch. He thought about recalling his brother from France, but instead, used a quick quotes quill to advise him of the situation. Rather than show any weakness, he told his brother to stay firm, protecting their family home in France. Rabastan had wanted to return, but Rodolphus demanded he stay – at least he could still give orders.
The phantom pain of his lost limb shuddered all the way up his shoulder and down his spine, and Rodolphus ground his teeth. He needed to make some sort of gesture – something to show everyone that he was still a force to be reckoned with.
To add insult to the injury, Orla had told him that Vaisey lived. Barely lived, but he had not died as Rodolphus had hoped. He would not make any more mistakes like that. Even as he thought that, he remembered the Muggle filth in his dungeon. The boy's mother. How apt. Another day or two, and he would be fit to be out of this wretched bed, and prove his point.
Nobody could keep a Lestrange down. Many had tried, and the world was about to know that no matter how hard it tried to defeat him, he would only come back stronger.
Better.
Faster.
The world had not seen the last of Rodolphus Lestrange.
