He did feel slightly sorry for Miles when he heard that he'd been forced, but he could not render his heart to feel as much as if he'd told him this a few weeks ago. In the end it all boiled down to choice anyway. Maybe Miles didn't have a choice back then, but he'd had a choice he hadn't chosen all along.
'Did you ever consider turning on those who forced you?' he asked plainly. 'Yes it would be dangerous, but at least it would help the right side win this war. If the wrong side wins it doesn't matter that it's over, it won't be safe for anyone anyway.'
He took another sip of his drink, feeling the guilt wash over him again. Wasn't he now helping the wrong side? Wasn't he doing what he accused Miles of doing? Why had he not risked telling Percy the truth?
Because his mother was meant to be protected. He'd failed her, just as he was now failing everything and everyone in an attempt to rectify his first mistake.
'I guess I shouldn't say anything,' he said instead, closing his eyes as the self loathing of his own actions, of his own mistakes, washed over him.
