Summary: Dora makes plans.
Nymphadora Lupin was making a list. It wasn't a long list, and perhaps in the long run it wasn't overly important, but it was a list. She made those when she was slowly starting to move on.
#1: Mum's things
Her quill had trailed just beneath those words for awhile as she'd tried to figure out what she was meant to write underneath them. It wasn't enough just to list it… there had to be a solution. Something she was supposed to do about it. That was the point here. These lists were meant to help her get things done in some sort of orderly fashion that didn't allow for mass amounts of procrastination. She would, otherwise, like she'd tried to with the funeral. Dora was still thankful that she'd had both Remus and the Dolohovs to help with that.
Clean and sort, she'd finally written down. Nothing much, but it was something to do. She had no idea what she would actually do with it all once she'd had it accounted for.
#2: Prep for Umbridge
This was perhaps her soul reason for making the list in the first place. The thought of inspections had Dora on edge, as if there weren't already enough things to contribute to her already frazzled state. Her life was something of an open book and there were few things she could even think of hiding from the Toad Lady. Dora wrinkled her nose as she held her pen above the parchment again. There were so many strikes against her already, metamorphmagus, married to a werewolf, member of the Order… she shook her head, and ran a hand through her brown hair.
She pursed her lips. There wasn't much to do around the house, but there was enough. She still had the books she'd taken from Grimmauld when she'd visited with Harry. Books about her mum's family history that she'd taken to read up on when she'd been so intent on spying. Then there was just her general curiosity about the Blacks, something which was only increasing with her mother's death. It wasn't as if there were people around she could ask, and so reading was her only option. Sure that Umbridge wouldn't appreciate an active curiosity in anything, Dora made a note on her parchment; Hide all Grimmauld books. There was a loose floorboard in the kitchen that would do, she hoped.
#3: Lesson plans
This went along with number two. She knew she'd have to have stable lesson plan developed for when it came to school inspections. She couldn't keep shoving things off on Remus and he'd been handling her classes for awhile now. She was going to give herself another week or so, and then she was going back. When Umbridge came around Dora was determined to have something to show her.
And Lethifolds probably shouldn't be on whatever it was she showed her.
Groaning, Dora rolled her eyes. As interested as she'd always been in theory, she didn't like to teach it and nothing else and she knew that was what Umbridge preferred. What was the point in looking at wand movement diagrams if you weren't going to actually do the wand movements?
She gave a small laugh for what seemed the first time in days. Appologise to students, she wrote down. And plan for elementary wand movement theory. They were going to hate her, but hopefully they would understand.
#4: Height
Being this short had it's advantages and disadvantages. She'd made a pros and cons list. The pros were varied. Fitting so snuggly into Remus' arms was extremely beneficial. She certainly wasn't going to complain about though. She'd also noticed that she wasn't as clumsy as she had been. Oh, it was still there, and she still tripped over her feet and couldn't balance with more than two things in her hands, but it was better. She was tripping over her feet instead of invisible strings and rocks. At least her feet were real. It was as if her limbs in her other body just weren't the right size and length, like she'd somehow kept her body in stasis during that awkward teenaged phase. The height and body change had fixed that, and as she'd slowly started experimenting with new heights, including her old one, she was discovering that apparently she just couldn't handle limbs longer than this. So five foot four it was, for now.
Antonin would be happy at least, Dora thought. Experimenting is key, she wrote. Pointless, but she liked to have notes below the initial goal. It helped her get there.
#5: Learn to cook
It was always good to have at least one unrealistic goal on the list. It meant that the other goals would be accomplished simply because she would be incapable of accomplishing this one and she'd procrastinate on it by working on the others.
Her system really did work.
She wanted to learn to cook, she really did, but she simply didn't see it happening anytime soon. Not only would it be slightly short of impossible, it would be slightly depressing. She'd spent a lot of time in her mum's kitchen watching and trying to figure out what she was doing wrong. Sometimes she was able to pull off the simplest of recipes, but she always felt as if she needed two or three doses of felix felicis before even walking into a kitchen. Dora was well aware she was a bit of a mess, but she was also aware that she felt bad, making Remus do all the cooking.
With her list complete (five was always the limit. Anymore than the five and she wouldn't get any of it done) Dora set her quill down on the desk. She picked up her wand from the pencil jar where she'd stuck it (likely Umbridge would have something to say about that habit) and tapped the parchment twice, muttering a spell to give the back a nice layer of stick so that she could slap it up on the wall just above the desk. Visiual reminders were key.
"Done," she said, looking at her handiwork. She reached up and pushed more hair from her face.
Now it was simply time to get to work.
