Summary: Kevin finally makes a breakthrough, but is cautious.
Kevin was knee deep into his research work at Antonin and Megan's home. His discussion with Morag a few days ago gave him a little more drive and fire to succeed.
But he was still frustrated. He'd gone through every book he could find on Muggle DNA, and every book on Animagi, and he still couldn't find the answer. It was like a puzzle that was missing just a piece or two.
He stood and walked to he back of the room, putting his head against the wall and sighing. After a moment, he looked up at the pattern in the wall. He turned his head, studying how it was like one of the old 'connect the dots' pictures he'd grown up with.
Suddenly, his eyes widened. "I wonder..." He turned and went back to his research. He laid everything out - his notes, some Muggle books, a Wizarding tome here and there - and drew his wand. He started making lines above everything, putting things together, cross referencing. After some time, the whole picture came together.
"YES!" he shouted in triumph, the information coming together with his knowledge of charms. About an hour of trial and error later, he had the charm. But now to test it.
He turned to the two small dishes on a side table. One held the mysterious hairs he found from his house, the other contained hairs from Headmistress McGonagall's cat form, which she generously donated. He took five hairs and laid them out on a table near the back of the room.
Success was not immediate. The first hair burned away. The second shriveled into nothing. But the third was truly the charm. A faint pattern illuminated above it, revealing a small amount of magical signature and DNA. He adjusted accordingly, and by the time he got to the fifth hair, the results shown fully and conclusively.
He sat and calmed down, happy that he'd finally broken through the fog in his mind. But he wasn't satisfied with this. He had to make sure that the charm was stable, that no damage happened to the hair in order for it to be used as evidence. Still, he was further than he was and was happy for that. He called for some lunch, relaxing now before returning to his work. He was closer to his goal... a couple of days of testing and he could put his plan into action.
