Daphne gave him a small smile. "Maybe," she said. "But so do you. I don't know how you handled the three of us all by yourself."
As much as she appreciated the gesture, she knew she couldn't do it. "I would just worry the whole time," she said softly, knowing it would be true. "And you've been doing nothing but taking care of us for weeks. When Liam gets better, we can take a day together. I think that will be much better."
At the mention of Millicent, and her lost baby though, her face both fell and paled considerably. Her stomach bottomed out, her hand going to her mouth. "Merlin, you're kidding..." she whispered, her eyes closing for a moment as she took a deep breath. She thought that surely this couldn't get any worse, and he'd proven her wrong again. How much more of this was she going to have to take. "I'm so sorry." She didn't think an apology would even help, but she'd felt the urge to say something, anything, to avoid the silence that would have followed.
