Summary: The Bletchley boys are sick, and they both want their Daphne.
When Liam woke with a start from his nightmares, it was to the fact that he couldn't see. Every time he blinked, his eyes felt scratchy. He was hot, and itchy all over, and very, very cranky because of it all. All he wanted was his daddy, and his Daphne.
It was terrifying not being able to see, and as panic set in, he cried in fright. He'd had some horrible dreams about bad pirates taking everyone away - Millicent, Ella, Daddy and Daphne. The bad pirates had taken them away and they were all ghosties like mummy. They were coming to get him when he woke. It was only when he felt soft hands and smelled the perfume that was distinctly Daphne that he realised she was truly there, soothing his tears and making his skin itch less as she washed it down. She made promises that the bad pirates weren't going to get anyone, but he was still sceptical.
He wanted daddy, and he cried almost incessantly until she carried him into the same bed as his father. He didn't want Daddy to be sick - but in a way it made him feel better to know that if he reached out, he could touch Daddy's arm.
Daddy was still sleeping (well, Liam could hear his snores, even if he couldn't see him), and he promised Daphne he'd not disturb him. Anyway, it hurt too much when he moved, and blinking when he couldn't see just seemed silly.
He didn't feel hungry, even though his throat hurt. The only thing he really felt like was ice-cream, and that felt good until it hit his tummy. He was sick and scared, but Daphne had called him her brave boy, so he didn't tell her how scared he was. He knew how worried Daddy had been when Daphne had been sick.
Daddy grunted and moaned (and cussed) when he woke, but Liam had never been hugged so hard by him ever before. He said he was was itchy too, and he was hot and feverish, but wanted Liam to stay there and they could share a sick bed. He was too hot to cuddle for too long, but at least Liam knew he was close if he needed anything. He didn't know why Daddy kept saying he was sorry, but he sounded just as sick as Liam felt.
Feeling the hair being brushed out of his eyes (that was Daphne - he recognised her touch), he was reluctant to go back to sleep (the bad pirates might come back!). He wanted to stay awake and hear a story, but his eyes just hurt so much, he was quickly crying again from the pain. He wanted to stay up and play - draw that picture for 'Cent's birthday, draw a picture for Ella, and to have Daddy send an owl to Marlowe to tell him that he was going to ask daddy for his own dog.
Daddy cussed and sweated and grumbled some more, and since he readily agreed to Daphne's suggestion to take a potion to sleep, then Liam figured he would too. He was too sore and too tired and too grumpy himself to argue as he felt the potion vial held to his lips. It tasted awful, but at least it made his throat feel just a little better.
He fell asleep to the feel of Daphne's fingers brushing through his hair, and the sound of Daddy already snoring in the bed beside him. Perhaps when he woke, he'd be able to see, and to enjoy a bowl of ice-cream and not feel sick in the tummy.
