School's Out Who: F’lox, Lyrra When: Graduation and wing assignments Where: Benden – training field outside Weyr Summary: SO HAPPY not to have to answer to S’bor anymore.
F’lox couldn’t help but grin over at Lyrra, who stood several men away from him in formation as they received their wing assignments and new knots designating their color and status as wingriders. They’d made it. Finally, they’d made it. No thanks to S’bor, but that wasn’t their problem anymore. Fen only hoped that there would be a new change in leadership when the frustrating man showed the full scope of his incompetence with the next weyrling class. The youngest of the Weyr’s queens had a clutch hardening on the sands, and hopefully the new dragonets could push the incompetent Weyrlingmaster out of his position for good. Even A’ver couldn’t argue with upset dragonets. They would spread their upset to all of the dragons, including the Weyrleader’s bronze.
His grin stayed in place even as S’bor scowled at him disapprovingly, pinning his new shoulder knots on and gruffly informing him he’s been assigned to the Fourth. R’ger must have made a special request; Fen didn’t think that was coincidence. He was relieved and excited about reporting to his new wing. It was satisfying to know your new Wingleader wasn’t an ass. If his semi-sister Imogen took to him he had to be a good man. She was too flighty and picky to settle down with just anyone.
Once they were dismissed (with a decided lack of ceremony), he found Lyrra and drug her into a big hug, ignoring some of the cheerful jibes from their classmates. Sour feelings had been washed away by their newfound freedom from the constant stress that was weyrlinghood. They were all ready to graduate months ago; now they had their chance to show everyone what they could really do.
“We’re free!” he cried happily, not particularly caring if S’bor overheard and he got himself into trouble. It was worth it for this moment of celebration. There would probably be no feast but he had every intention of sitting them down in the dining hall and grabbing copious amounts of food. Perhaps even wine. And, of course, celebrating more privately with his green rider later. They had a free day and were to report to their new wings early the next day.
