A cracking sound filled the air as his slender fingers worked a piece of driftwood. Alec's dark gaze was set securely on the waves, but his mind was nowhere. He broke a piece of wood over and over in his fingers. Each snap and crack barely registered in his mind. Tiny pieces of wood littered the sand between his knees, soon there wouldn't be much left for his fingers to destroy.
Life here was complicated and made no sense, at least it didn't seem to make sense. He had worked hard to get an Institute, which was now run over with people, and he had done everything he thought he should have. Yet, somehow, he was still left feeling like he had no idea just what he was doing. He no longer knew where he stood with people. He hated not feeling in control, but all he felt here was a lack of control.
The first moment of doubt had been when he had fought with his own parabatai about Magnus. That had turned out painful for everyone. Jace and Alec had barely spoken, it wasn't until recently that they finally seemed to get along again. Mark had pretty much told them they needed to talk and that had opened the floodgates of sorts.
His eyes narrowed as he flicked the last piece of wood away from him. Mark Blackthorn was the most confusing person he had ever met. When Magnus had asked for the break and Alec had pretty much fallen apart Mark had been there annoying him. The half-Seelie hadn't seemed to care there was a chance that Alec would get angry, no, he had just kept talking to him. Alec supposed that if he was stuck in this place then it was a good thing he had Mark. Mark didn't hide things from him, though half the time he did kind of want to shove the other Shadowhunter into the pool for being annoying. A faint sigh escaped him as he let himself fall backward against the sand so his eyes now stared unfocused at the sky.
Would he ever go home? Would things ever be normal?
Later, when he got home, he'd probably be cranky about the fact sand was getting everywhere, but at the moment he just let his mind clear. Alec rarely tried to meditate and at that moment he was just welcoming the blank feeling that was filling his mind. He planned on just not thinking for a handful of minutes and then he'd head home. Someone had to feed the masses and make sure there were no random animals in the house. A faint sigh escaped him as his eyes fluttered shut, dark lashes standing out in contrast against his pale face.
