Li figured out the nobs and buttons of her stove easily enough. The apartment filled with the pleasant aromas of traditional delights. (Though Li recalled, it smelled nothing like the memory of her mother's food.) Each burner boiled away at a separate dish; dumplings in one, noodles in another, vegetables and soup.
Li never met deceased or the strange man who'd left the angry, ranting message. There was something in his fury that she empathized with. Though he may not have been upset for those who died recently, she could not imagine he was sounded so consistently cruel. Li could do nothing for the dead, but she could offer the mysterious No. 0000 a small gesture of compassion.
Her small gesture came in four large tupperware bowls, the food inside designed to keep well. The kitchen stocked so much stuff it hardly felt connected to the rest of her apartment. If anything, Li was relieved at the prospect of ridding herself a few more things.
The challenge was to find a mystery room number made up of four zeros. Checking the lobby first she found no sign. Arms loaded with heavy, sloshing containers of food, Li recalled the room's four digits and took the stairs to the very top, thinking there might be something between the twelfth floor and the penthouses. Nothing. The penthouses and the roof? Nothing. Li nervously attempted to use the elevator which had no button to indicate where room No. 0000 might located. It promptly sent her back to the beginning, the fourth level, though she'd selected the sub-basement.
Committed, Li again took the stairs leading down once more to find an angry man's secret room.
