He gave her a smile that full of memories--memories of the places they had gone together, off the beaten path, edgy versions of high society's reservations-only venues. When she mentioned her parents he shrugged, "I don't know...you hardly seemed ready to strike out on your own at the time... And it's not like you had it rough with them..."
