Sell the farm? Aaron didn't even know people still owned farms, like families, and stuff. He didn't say that out loud. "Oh. Sorry to hear that." Was that what people said about losing the farm? "No I... just got in last week." He thought about telling her he'd never been to a high school before, but he decided that would just be some form of suicide, so he backtracked and said nothing. Why couldn't he come up with anything to say that wasn't an awkward response to a question?
