There were two explanations: either Shane really didn't like dogs, or he knew they could sense something about himself that he didn't want Vlad knowing.

Cain and Abel strained at their leashes, determined to go after Shane - but Vlad refused to be led anywhere, and a bit of pressure was all that was needed to reign them in. He exited the elevator slowly, the dogs keeping as far ahead of him as they could without being choked by their collars. They continued to growl, the sound deeper than it had been in the elevator, both baring their teeth in wary snarls.
He made no move to go to the front door, even though he was originally headed outside to take them for a walk. "It seems they are very good judges of character, does it not?" He couldn't resist, amusement evident in his voice.
