Why didn't she get it? This wasn't about the past. Or the present, or the future. This was about it all. Everything, simultaneously, was wrong. There was somebody there, somebody in his head, that he didn't know. It was like a houseguest that stole all your food, only in this case, he hurt people. Brian had wondered for years where that bruise on Gloria's face had come from, and why she looked at him with such disgust and hatred. He wondered why she never spoke to him during the divorce and only spoke through her attorney. This other person, this Mr. Hyde, had hit her. He had to have. If he could hit Gloria, Brian's wife, the woman he loved more than anything, then there was no telling what he could do to Sherri.
"No!" he shouted again, slamming a fist into the door. "You can't promise that!" Slumping against the door, he pressed a hand to his face as the tears came again in another wave. "Take your sister and get out of here. Go. There's vampires 'n Mr. Hydes 'n goblins here."
