Who: Xavier and Sam
What: Business talk. Oh and power disabling.
Where: 904
When: June 24th, 8:00 PM
Warnings: Swearing?
Notes: Xavier gave Sam a call, assumed ooc, switching their visit from Monday to Thursday. Timelines suck.

He didn’t expect much of the visit – it was business, just related to the building. He’d done a bit of research on Madin’s zoo, digging deeper than what the press releases said. He had a few guesses on what was going on there, but didn’t really care. In his opinion, humans came before animals. He didn’t advocate animal cruelty, but in the name of the right cause – well, this was science and improving lives. Some sacrifices had to be made.

Leaving his apartment at five-to, Xavier was perfectly on time when he showed at Sam’s door. A picture placed on the wall offered enough of a reflection for him to check his illusion – he had not done anything in the world of his “usual” disguises or changed his clothing. While in reality he wore a casual pants and a collarless shirt, he looked like he was dressed in slacks and a dress shirt. The joy of it? He didn’t even sweat from the clothes. His eyes were dark and his nose slightly more curved than usual – and he looked, a tad healthier than he usually did. Some things, not even time could fix. Make-up or these illusions could hide his pallor, nothing else worked.

Satisfied, he knocked on the door, ready for whatever would occur.

Xavier nearly laughed at that, but managed to only give a gritted grin. He took the beer, following him out to the living room, taking a seat on the couch. At the arrival of the ashtray, he courteously tapped the end and discarded it. Though he’d been smoking since college, in recent years he’d attempted to cut down – he truly only pulled out his pack and smoked when in an emergency. For now he felt level-headed enough to proceed.

He let the bottle dangle from one hand between his legs, the other wresting wrist-on-knee. Looking up at the offer, he shook his head. “As tempting as the offer is, I can’t ruin the surprise.” And frankly, he didn’t trust him enough yet. If Xavier were to spill his secrets left and right, where would that leave him? He shook his head, raising the bottle to take a sip of his beer. “Besides, that’s not what I came here for.”

Sam flopped down in an armchair, getting comfortable. Yep, waiting out the effects of magic erasers. This would be interesting. "That's fine," he said, and he wouldn't press for information. "So investing! What are the payback options?" He had a feeling it wouldn't end up being very standard, but he just wanted to know what Xavier wanted or needed. And this guy was on a mission, that was certain.

He lowered his beer bottle, mind going to the pesky world of business. Damn it, he hated these things. "Depends on the product itself. I'm going to need to see some proof of progress and so on - updates and the like." He raised a finger, adding. "Blueprints could be enough. Proof that you have facilitites and the people ready to hire to do this - unless you're taking it on yourself."

As for the money itself...Xavier could have bought the entire building if he wanted to, Roof, Penthouses and all. A little money on a research investment couldn't hurt - and besides, he wanted to make sure Sam kept silent. He was indebted to him, he realized, just by him keeping this secret. While he didn't mind taking favors from others - or doing them for people he knew were good and he trusted, Sam didn't fall under those categories.

"I'm willing to wait six months, before we start an installment plan. A low rate of interest - five, six percent or so."

Well, it wasn't as shady as Sam had expected. Not that he gave a shit about shady - he had a goal, and nothing was stopping him from getting there. An indomitable will and an unwavering drive were traits that he hadn't gotten from either of his parents, really, but both were there.

"Sounds do-able," he replied. "I can give you updates, definitely more than blueprints." He was a bit of an overachiever when it came to scientific endeavors. "It's mostly a project I've taken on myself, my own research I mean, I do genetic testing, but the zoo itself was my father's and I want to expand on it." There was lots of room for improvement, which would benefit all parties - it would keep the employees happy, and everyone else off his back about his research. That was something that irritated the hell out of him. Rapists and murderers had cocktail parties in this building but he had to keep his research a secret because a few batshit environmentalists might be all sadface about him testing on mice. Fucking morons.

Xavier nodded, almost carelessly. “I’ll have my lawyer contact-” He paused. No, he couldn’t do that if Sam could get rid of his illusions. Even if he went with the normal methods, becoming William wouldn’t do. He took a deep breath, exhaling slowly. “I’ll send you the contract, once I draw it up. Give me a week or so.”

He stared at his bottle for a moment more, before looking up. “Could you explain to me though, exactly what you are doing? I know you want to stop your transformation, but I have a feeling this is about more than that.”

Sam watched Xavier carefully. He wanted to tell him that it was fine, he wasn't trying to become his enemy, and all he was looking for was discretion involving his research, and hell, Sam definitely wasn't going to blab to the first person who came along that Xavier could look like Lady Gaga if he so chose. But he didn't say that, just nodded. "We're two totally different...species," he began, referring to Shere Khan. "I can't own a zoo and then have a tiger around, in my head, telling me to stop." What Shere Khan actually said was even worse - that tiger would be around permanently if he had his way. "But anyway, my research is mainly focused on genetic models, understanding how degenerative disorders develop, Parkinson's Disease specifically. Understanding the how, and the development, and for example why monkeys with similar symptoms show improvement after receiving brain stem cell transplants..." He trailed off, tipping his head back to ingest a swig of beer. "So yeah, it's a big conflict. I mean, can you imagine doing all of that and then morphing into a tiger?" A tiger who had a human-hating agenda, as a bonus.

Xavier listened intently, bottle swinging slightly between his knees as his mind raced. There’d been a obituary for the boy’s mother, he remembered. Things clicked in his mind as he looked at Sam with a new level of admiration. His own mission then. He approved entirely. “I understand completely,” Xavier said with a bitter smile. “And it’s a good cause, as well as being a good idea.”

He reached into his pants pocket, pulling out a business card. Just in case he forgot later – he wouldn’t but it was a nice thought. “We’ll call it four percent, with an extended terms. You can pay as you need, but if the money can be better spent on further research…” He waved a hand.

"Thank you," Sam replied, sincerely, as he took the business card. It was difficult to find someone who understood - if anyone knew, they most likely would look at him like he was just fucking with animals for fun, like some crazy torturer. He didn't really want to talk about his mother, but he went on to say, "The zoo itself is...well..." Sam rubbed his forehead. "My father wasn't the best caretaker, but I'm trying to improve on things." The idiot couldn't even tend to a goldfish properly, let alone a zoo. Let alone a family.

He took another sip of his beer, nodding absently. Somehow he knew saying that he thought humans were more important animals wouldn’t go well. “Good for you,” he said, fake-sincere. His lies were used to at this time now and it shouldn’t have sounded that different from his enthusiasm prior. “Everyone can stand to improve a little. It’s what makes us human after all.” Some philosopher had said something once – he couldn’t remember, as it had never been his schtick – about how it was human nature to strive towards perfection or something like that. The messed up quote didn’t settle with him, so he kept quiet giving a little shrug.

Improvement was mainly so that he could get the employees to shut the fuck up - especially the girl who was obsessed with the aquarium - but hey, it couldn't hurt in the long run. "I'm just a man on a mission," Sam grinned. "People can love it or hate it, but it is what it is. I don't want to look back, when I'm ancient, and see that I didn't do all I could have done. That seems like it'd be pretty horrifying."

At that, Xavier cracked a rueful grin. “Precisely. Knowing that you could have done something and instead failed…” He trailed off, not needing to say more. Sam would understand, even if he didn’t get that Xavier was on his own mission. “As long as you’ve done whatever you can and not let anyone beat you down, you should be able to look at it from the other side and be satisfied.”

There was a hint of hypocrisy in that, just in the fact that Xavier knew that he himself wouldn’t be satisfied until he had his revenge. If his life had gone normally and he’d become the professor of psychology as he wanted to be, he knew he’d not have stopped until he succeeded in his goals. It was his own trait – he wouldn’t give up and he wouldn’t accept failure.

"We'll see, right? I don't intend to let anyone stop me." Crazy environmentalists and 'do-gooders,' people who probably were as rotten to the core as an apple sitting in a dark, damp closet for three days - be damned. "This all provided that this building doesn't stick us all on another planet," he chuckled. "People say that we belong here, but...I'm not sure if I believe it."

“Good,” he said, mouth quirking slightly. “And don’t let the building stop you either. And an ‘anything” to that mantra and keep repeating it.” Did people belong in Bellum Letale? Xavier’s lips pressed together as he debated it. He couldn’t say – he hadn’t ever felt that he truly belonged in a place. With someone? Yes. Away from somewhere? Yes. But his childhood home had never satisfied him and even now, he knew that Harvard had not be the perfect place for him. He’d travelled the world and seen the greatest to the lowest things.

“I always wanted to live by the sea,” Xavier said, something bitter crossing his face. Taking a swig of his beer, he put it down on the floor. “But when I heard about this building, something beyond the convenience did tempt me.” Mainly the way the police turned a blind eye to the building. “The fables do make it suspicious.”

"Same for you," Sam smiled crookedly. "Because I have a feeling that time travel won't be the last weird thing to happen - living here is like a test that puts people through the ringer to see who's strong enough to survive."

He chewed on the inside of his cheek, listening. "You'll get there eventually," he said with a nod. "I think that most anything is possible with enough effort, and belief that it will happen. I'm not sure if I want to resign myself to being a tiger once a month, forever. And I also don't think our lives have to mimic the stories exactly." Depending on the version of the story, Shere Khan died at the end. Dracula died. The Wicked Witch died too. 'Good' often triumphed over 'evil,' and everything was all bundled together neatly in a decent little package. Real life wasn't like that.

"From what I've seen, that's standard fare around here." If this was a test for survival, then he questioned whether bringing Gina and Lucas here was a good idea. Once again, it seemed like he might have made a mistake - how long would it take for them to learn of the fables and piece it together? Not that Gina was any Mercedes - she could have visited him in prison. She could have.

He nodded. "Of course. I'm also out of my element by being overseas. I like my apartment though and a decent portion of the building so far. And quite a few in the building have accepted their fables." He shook his head. "You'd think more would move out...." He trailed off at the mention of stories ending. "Free will is a fine thing to believe in," he said, after a moment, voice soft. "A very fine thing."

Previously, Sam didn't really believe in fate - but now he was a bit more open to the idea. "I don't exactly think that everything happens for a reason," he said thoughtfully, twisting the beer bottle around in his hands. "But I think that there are certain things that are going to happen no matter what, things that are supposed to happen - and they work themselves out in the end. So whether or not we were meant to be here, well..." He shrugged. "Maybe so. I definitely would have expected more to move out though," he chuckled wryly. "But I guess a lot stay for other people."

A side of Xavier’s mouth curved upward, but he couldn’t agree or disagree. He wasn’t the most religious person in the world, but he liked to believe that Karma did exist. He had suffered for all these years and he would get his revenge, as Karma saw fit. It would go according to plan and fall through, because it was meant to be. Xavier simply had to act on it.

“People can often be a large motivator,” he admitted.

"Definitely," Sam agreed, exhaling in a whoosh. "They sort of have to be. I mean, no man is an island, right? People can't thrive when isolated from others." He paused, rubbing the back of his neck. "Philosophy wasn't my thing, but I like psychology, and the two often go hand in hand."

"That's what they say," Xavier said. His smile said that he agreed, but he wasn't sure. After all, he'd managed alright without anyone - beyond Iris and Abraham - over the years. He'd taken on the roles needed in order to survive. People may do better when around others - but it wasn't impossible.

"Just take that guy from Cast Away. He started talking to a volleyball to keep from going completely nuts and cried when it 'died,'" Sam said jokingly, getting up to wash out his beer bottle and toss it in the recycle bin - he tried to remember to do that. The recycling center wasn't far from where he worked anyway. "Alright, so try your thing again," he added, coming back into the living room. He made a conscious decision to not invoke any strange magical erasers, and sat on his hands. "Let's see if it works now. Maybe....hmmm...Barack Obama this time?" He was kidding, clearly, but wow - wouldn't that be handy!

Xavier blinked. The name didn't make sense to him and he supposed it was another one of those things he'd missed during his years in prison. A moment later, he recovered nodding. "Exactly." Hopefully that hadn't been a trick question.

At the request, he raised a brow - even if he'd turned into Harrison Ford the other evening, imitating real people was something he had no desire to do. "If for some reason I became stuck as him, I'd be in a bit of trouble." He didn't move his beer bottle - recycling had never been his concern, simply focusing on the image of himself again. (Funny, how these days Xavier felt normal than Edward did.) Slowly he passed his hand over his eyes and then his nose, before looking up. "Different?"

Sam watched intently, leaned forward with his elbows balanced on his knees. "Uhhh..." He squinted, checking out the eye color. "Yep, they're brown again. How long was that?" Sam noted the time. "An hour? Good to know." He wondered if he could make it last longer if he kept practicing - also, wouldn't that be handy? It's just that he'd have to find other people to practice on.

Xavier visibly relaxed at the confirmation. "Great." He didn't use a hand for his clothes, them changing with the slightest ripple. His coloring changed a bit next, before he finally was how he arrived - Xavier Delamere, Englishman.

He reached for his bottle, putting it on the coffee table with a slight shrug. "About an hour. It's a pleasure to do business with you, but let's forgo the handshake from now on." Personal space boundaries would have to be employed as well. He paused. "I don't have to add, that this can't happen again, right?"

He laughed a little at the handshake comment, picking up the beer bottle and tossing it into the recycle bin from where he sat - ten points! "Nah, I don't see any reason why it should happen again," Sam said cheerfully - meaning, don't give me a reason to use it and I won't. "But sure, we can forgo the handshake. I'll work on that though," he added, thinking it over. There had to be a way to do it mentally, probably with practice too. Otherwise he'd have to start wearing gloves or something.

The meaning of that comment was clear enough and Xavier nodded, amusement settling on his face. "Good. Let's hope it stays that way then." He moved to the door, business concluded and the ability to leave back.

"I'll let you know when the contract's done," he said. "You mind if I let myself out? I've got a busy day tomorrow." His grin was more than rueful, but the reason why couldn't be said. The fact that he was going to see his one-time fiancee for the first time in twelve years? No, it couldn't be important at all.

"Sounds good. And sure, no problem. Thanks for coming over," Sam replied, getting up to see his guest out. Even though every step felt like a katana blade was stuck in between his ribs, it was still the polite thing to do. "If you need anything else..." he shrugged, his hand on the doorknob. Even if Xavier wanted to stop by for more philosophical discussions over beer, that would be perfectly kosher. People who walked around acting like they had it all usually didn't.

People always used that phrase lightly. They hardly meant it seriously - in terms of evading the law, helping commit a crime, saving a life in an emergency. It was in terms of borrowing a cup of sugar or a piece of advice. But Xavier meant it when he said it and would hold others to it as well. His smirk spread and he said, "You as well. With anything at all."

He slipped out the door, before heading out the door. The stairs were climbed quickly and the door unlocked in seconds. Once locked - deadbolted and with several additional precautions, Xavier let his illusions fall once more and let his head slam against the nearest wall.
