Luther listened to her explanation in attentive silence. A few lanes were switched as cars moved pass them and he adjusted his cruise control, but otherwise he was paying attention. Her explanation did make sense, but there was something that twisted in his stomach. He had a surprising amount of trust in Joanie, more than he could say he’d placed in anyone in several years. Rodriguez almost didn’t count – the man had raised him and knew all his weaknesses and embarrassing stories. Though he may have appeared to only care about the law, as Javert had pointed out continuously while in Russia, it wasn’t true. Luther had gotten to the point where he cared about the updates in his friends’ lives. He liked to think that to an extent, he was part of them.
Maybe not.
His lips pressed into a firm line, until she ended with the unspoken statement of awkwardness. At that he looked to her, with a raised brow. “The message on his end, seemed forward.” But then again, some people were like that. He had seemed like the cocky asshole type when they first spoke on the forums. Luther looked back to the road, drumming his fingers on the wheel.
“I did ask about him before,” he said, but that was his only protest. He sighed, shaking his head. “Do you want me to do a background check on him?” It wasn’t meant in a teasing way – it was an honest offer, going out of his way for one of the few people he did care about. Unfortunately, this was the only way for him to say, I’d like to make sure you don’t get hurt.
