She gave him a slight smirk. “Clearly we should have checked the reviews before we signed that lease. Lesson learned to check for time traveling fine print.”
She laughed softly at the mental image, clearly remembering what he was taking about. “After your robotic legs you’ll have to work on a space ship. And find a gun for hire, so I may knit him a hat.” She gave his hand a gentle squeezing, glad that he was absorbing this all well enough. “It’s okay. I managed—I managed to convince Mina to help me out. She was… particularly loud while we were there, even though there was no full moon. So I made her help us out. She sort of took over, set us all free. She had to jump into the fire though. That’s why…” she gestured up the length of her body. While the burns on her legs were bad, there were ones up her arms and face from having jumped into the flames and then jumped out almost as quickly.
“She also carried a girl back to the woods,” she stifled a soft laugh at how strange it sounded. “She also helped set the countryside on fire, but it was to keep the murderous mob at bay." Had she told him about the mob? Maybe she was forgetting some details. "And she stayed on guard the rest of the night, in case some strays came to kill them. Which they did.” Mina was pretty heroic, when she wasn’t screaming about damnation. Of course, there was still the price she had to pay for all that strength, and Helena’s stomach turned as she remembered the peasant she drank from. She pushed the thought away just as quickly as it came and continued on. “That’s why there’s all the frostbite,” she said sheepishly. She was more than glad that Mina had protected everyone as best she could, but it had bitten Lena later once they came home and her feet felt like she had been soaking them in ice for hours.
