The screaming stopped, but then she started crying. Though Joanie had had arguments with her almost-neighbor in the past - she had wanted to kill the girl over the whole "list" fiasco - hearing her sob like that was horrifying and heartbreaking and utterly horrendous in every way. It made her want to run screaming.
As he brushed her hair from her face, she closed her eyes, heaving a sharp breath. Eyes opening, she glanced about as well. "Yeah. How're we getting back? I don't have money..." She supposed she could make some, but Luther would lock her up if he found out. At Sam's question, she cringed. "No, thanks," she said, shaking her head. "I think we all need to sleep in our own beds tonight," she said, infusing her voice with a bit of laughter that felt hollow. "It's better medicine than anything they can give us in this stupid place."
