It was hard to concentrate on the world around him, but he tried to focus on Lucy and the sound of her voice, letting her help him up to sitting, his midsection feeling as though he was burning from the inside out. "I can try," he said, and he was starting to move in that direction when her voice turned sharp, his name coming from her lips.
He struggled to get up then, his knees weak, but he willed himself to move though he held tightly to the woman at his side for balance. "More fire. Everything's on fire," he said, and he glanced towards Lucy, his face falling slightly. "You're like him. Like..." But John didn't finish his sentence, looking away from her pointedly.
