Lotte's explanation of the horrible events scarcely helped Bran's cause. As her friend recited, James did not pull the tempestuous burn of her bluesmoke eyes away from him.

"You let the mob get a hold of her?" Spoken under the veil of disbelief that said James would have never let such a thing happen if Lotte had been with her instead. She wrinkled her nose in a silent scoff when Bran insisted that Lotte was, at least, alive. Well, if that was his only requisite for success, no wonder Lotte seemed so anxious.

Rather than continue picking the man apart, she shook her head and focused on the smaller woman. "It doesn't matter." They were together now, that was all that was important.
