Who: Ileana, Stefan, and Cole
What: Meet the family for Cole.
Where: 1203
When: Backdated to Friday evening
Warnings: We'll see if Stefan doesn't punch Cole.

Out of everything, Ileana hadn't really expected to be nervous. She threatened Stefan with bodily harm if he threatened Cole, but she was still worried about a first impression. Not only that, but she had to think about Esme being in the building as well. Ileana had spent actual time cleaning up 1203 and starting to cook a meal, trying to keep herself busy.

Tonight she was working on beef stroganoff for the main course, the most she asked of Stefan was to make sure that they had things to drink and "go out and buy some sort of fucking pie or whatever" for dessert. She was busy with a heated skillet when she heard the door. Ileana called out, "Stefan, get the door!" and went back to work.

Stefan made some unintelligible and unhappy noise at her command but got up all the same. He hadn't stopped regretting his initial idea of wanting to meet Cole. At the time it seemed like an inevitability. Ileana obviously liked him. Rosalie vouched for him. The guy knew his secrets and so far hadn't called the cops on him. It didn't seem too bad.

That was until the man decided to prove he was a concerned, law-abiding and pro-active sort of citizen, and Ileana refused to let Stefan take his offer back. He quickly glanced over at the kitchen, glossing over the apple pie that he bought and made sure he had enough beer to last the dinner. He was going to fucking need it.

When he opened the door, Stefan gave the guy an obvious once over. He had almost forgotten how old he was and the beginnings of a scowl couldn't be stopped. "You Cole?" He wasn't trying to be rude, but that was about the best hello he could muster.

Meeting Stefan wasn't very high on Cole's list of things he wanted to do, but he figured it was better to just get it over with instead of prolonging the inevitable. He wasn't stupid enough to think that he and the man would become best friends, especially considering his temporary Batman complex coupled with the fact that Stefan was... well, a criminal. That didn't necessarily make him a bad person, though he wasn't pleased that Ileana got caught up in his schemes.

Still, he was determined to try to be as polite as possible. He had flowers - because he was Ileana's boyfriend, and he wasn't going to pretend otherwise just for Stefan's sake - and some kind of... cake pie thing that he'd picked up at the last minute. It seemed wrong to show up empty-handed, and after one last look at his appearance he headed up to 1203.

To say he was nervous was be an understatement, but he pasted on the friendliest smile he could muster when the door opened. The man facing him had to be Stefan, and he sighed inwardly at the hint of a scowl. "I'm Cole, yes. You must be Stefan." He managed to juggle the dessert and flowers, offering him his free hand. "It's nice to finally meet you." He could do this. It was only one dinner.

Ileana covered the skillet with the glass top, turning the heat down to low as she heard Stefan and Cole. "Close the door before Nico gets out!" she called out as Nico barked and ran through the living room. With an exhasperated huff, Ileana dried her hands on a hand towel before she made a rush to go grab Nico by the collar.

Gently tugging the dog to turn back towards the hall and bedrooms, Ileana let go off his collar before beaming at Cole. "Hey Batman," she greeted him as she walked over to lean up to give him a peck on the cheek and took the flowers from him. "You can just put the pie on the table for now. Thanks for coming up. I'm making stroganoff, I hope you don't have any problems with that."

Stefan shook the offered hand silently, nodding but not bothering with any other niceties like pretending he was glad to meet him. His stare down was interrupted by Illy's voice and he cursed under his breath, ushering Cole in and quickly closing the door.

He, of course, rolled his eyes at her new nickname for her boyfriend but talk of pie distracted him, as it often did. "Aw, see I didn't even have to get a pie. He brought one of his own." Even from his tone it didn't sound like he was particularly upset. More like he we complaining for the sake of it, as actual conversation was going to take a bit more work. "You want anything to drink?" See? He had manners.

Cole noted Stefan's silence, but he really hadn't expected anything more. He supposed he should just be grateful no fists had come flying at his face yet. The sight of Nico made him smile, however, and gave the puppy a pat before Ileana tugged him away. "Hey," he said, rolling his eyes a little at the nickname. He was never going to live that one down.

He had no idea what the hell stroganoff was, but he pretended he did and nodded. "Sounds great." Glancing between Ileana and Stefan, he wasn't sure if the fact that they already had pie was a big deal or nothing to worry about. "I guess we have double the dessert now," he offered, setting the pie down on the table and trying to disguise his awkwardness. The tension was, to him at least, all too apparent. Yeah, he wanted something to drink; something stiff and strong preferably, but that wasn't an option. "Sure, thanks. I'll just have what you're having."

Ileana pulled a face at both of them. She couldn't believe that they were going to pull this all night. "You did need to go get the pie," Ileana said to Stefan, "because it got you out of my hair for a half hour."

"I'm going to put this in water," she told them, "Help yourselves to drinks and stuff. I'll be back after I check on the food too." Ileana went back in to the kitchen, finding a vase in one of the top cupboards and putting the flowers in them. Turning her attentions away from the boys for awhile and back to the food.

Stefan made another scoffing sort of noise at Ileana’s reasoning but left it at that. So he liked to hover. And complain. Big deal.

He maneuvered around Ileana and grabbed a beer for himself. He momentarily contemplated getting Cole a water but he took another bottle, popped them open and handed it to the other man. Now without something to keep him occupied, he was left to attempt conversation once more.

“So.” A long bit of silence. There were a million things they needed to talk about, but even Stefan didn’t feel like starting right off the bat with the heavy stuff. “Rose said you’re a teacher?” Not Illy, but Rosalie. Stefan had asked around. Not a lot, but Cole didn’t need to know about that.

Half of him cringed at the idea of being alone with Stefan for more than two minutes, not because he was afraid but because anything longer than that would be so awkward. He was a mature adult, however - which was kind of part of the problem - and he could manage a bit of conversation before Ileana returned and rescued the situation.

Cole took the beer with a muttered thanks, momentarily blanking on who Rose was before it hit him. Rosalie - they'd been talking about him? Wonderful. "Yeah. I teach English at the high school a few blocks away." Normally he would have asked what Stefan did in return, but... that really wasn't a road he wanted to go down now. "It's... well, you know, kind of hectic now with summer and exams. The students get restless." He cut himself off from rambling too much with a sip of beer, wishing he didn't know what Stefan's 'job' really was. It would have made things a lot easier.

Stefan listened silently to Cole’s rambling, taking long drinks each time he was tempted to remind him that Ileana wasn’t that much older than his students. Sure enough, his bottle was growing emptier sooner than he would have liked. “Must be nice to have the summer vacation.” Working through the school year and then taking a few months off? It wasn’t like he worked normal hours or a normal job, but Stefan could see the appeal.

“So what’re you going to do with all the free time? Go somewhere? Do something?” He swirled the remaining beer at the bottle before raising it to his lips with a smirk. He figured he might as well bite the bullet. “Or are you going full time on this caped crusader gig?”

At the moment he wasn't looking forward to summer vacation as he should have been. The free time was nice, and it meant he had more time for Ileana, but it also meant his escape from this madhouse was gone. Work was an excuse to live in the normal world for a bit, and now he needed to find something else or he'd literally lose his mind. "Yeah, the free time is nice."

Cole shrugged, laughing awkwardly at the caped crusader remark. Despite what a disaster his attempts had been, the bottom line was that Trenton had killed Aaron and there was no way he could have not done something about it. He doubted Stefan knew that he was personally invested, rather than just jumping at the chance to play Batman, but he didn't feel like enlightening him. "No, the caped crusader gig was more of a... one-time thing. A momentary lapse of judgment." People overreacted all the time - it could have been worse. He could have actually killed him. "I'm thinking taking up a different sort of hobby might be better."

“Glad to hear it,” he replied almost immediately before downing the last of his beer and nervously running a hand through his hair. “Not saying the fuck didn’t deserve it.” Stefan was a lot of things, and let a lot of things slide. Regardless if he was capable of murder, Stefan was grateful that he had managed to scrape by with theft and the occasional ass kicking. But rape? No excuse.

“It’s just... you know. Shit’s complicated enough with...” He made some offhand gesture to both him and his surroundings. Everything was complicated enough with Stefan’s job description. Throwing Illy’s do-gooding boyfriend into the mix made it ten times worse. “You might want to take up running instead. You know, if you ever miss the thrill of the chase.” He waved his empty bottle at Cole, silently asking if he wanted another, as he crept back toward the ktichen.

Ileana was making her way from the kitchen when she saw Stefan going towards. "If you drink more than two beers before dinner, I'm not letting you have dessert," she told him as she moved passed. She flashed him a little smile to show she was sort of joking about that.

Ileana want to sit down on the couch next to Cole, "Dinner's almost ready." And when Stefan disappeared in to the kitchen, she stole herself a kiss and quietly, "Thank you for coming tonight."

Cole was in no place to judge anyone, since one of his friends happened to be a murderer himself, and admittedly he was a hypocrite for coming down hard on Trenton and protecting Shane. Still, it was different, and if it meant he was like everyone else and contradicted himself, well... so be it. "I knew the boy who was murdered," he said with a sigh, "And I got angry. I have no interest in... being the new sheriff of Bellum or anything." He had no intention of revealing what he knew about Stefan's schemes, and it wasn't his place to start lecturing the man here and now. Instead he just nodded, thinking that running really wasn't such a bad idea. He'd always meant to join a gym, too.

Cole grinned up at Ileana, waiting until Stefan was completely out of sight to return the kiss. "How could I say no? Besides, I really do want to get along with Stefan. He hasn't hit me yet, so I think that's a good sign."

Cole’s reassurances did wonders for Stefan and while he didn’t completely believe it yet – he didn’t know the man, afterall – at least they seemed to come to some sort of verbal agreement. He opened another beer despite Ileana’s teasing and made his way back to stop any attempts at kissing or hugging or anything like that. Instead when he entered the living room, they were practically gazing at each other. That was just as bad.

He cleared his throat, loudly.

"It is a good sign," Ileana assured Cole with a smile. Well, she hoped it was a good sign and not just Stefan biding his time. Ileana rolled her eyes when she heard Stefan behind her, but did scoot back a little on the couch and turn to look at Stefan.

"Don't you dare say a word," she shot at Stefan in Romanian. If she was going to argue with Stefan, she wasn't doing it in English.

Cole felt like a teenager all over again, but at least they were just looking at each other - even though the sound of Stefan clearing his throat didn't startle him as much as he would have expected.

Oh no. He didn't recognize the language Ileana was speaking, and if it wasn't French then he had no hope of even trying to understand it. Instead he tried to slide back subtly, looking as though the shift in language was totally natural.

“I didn’t say anything,” he muttered darkly, although his lazy shrug was more for Cole’s sake. He couldn’t help but add, “You should remind him you’re not on the menu though.” Even if he didn’t know the words, Stefan’s unappreciative tone was clear. He took another drink before he gave Cole humorless smile.

"We weren't even kissing. You had Rose over and you kept trying to make out in front of me," Ileana said back, trying to keep her tone light and neutral as if Cole wouldn't know they were saying anything concerning him. Sure, it had been a fable night, but it still counted as make outs.

Ileana leaned over and gave Cole a quick kiss on the cheek before she stood up, "Dinner should be almost done. I'll bring everything out." And she turned back to Stefan, "If you don't quit being difficult, I'll make the rest of your god forsaken life more difficult than you could ever comprehend."

He didn't need to understand the language to get the gist of what Stefan was saying, and it was all too obvious that they were talking about him. Apparently Stefan would only be pleased if he kept a respectable three feet away from Ileana while in his presence, and Cole couldn't help but feel a faint stab of annoyance. It was fine for him to drag her into his illegal activities which could get them both thrown in jail, but dating a guy with an age difference crossed the line. Right.

He stood up after she did, nodding when she mentioned dinner was almost ready and attempting to smile at Stefan. "Are you sure you don't want any help?" He wasn't actually expecting her to say yes, but it was worth a try.

Ileana’s reasoning only earned her another indignant snort. Unfortunately he had little room to say anything to that, even if had been during the full moon. When she kissed Cole’s cheek Stefan turned his head slightly to hide the eyeroll, but her threats only made him grin. “I’m being difficult? I’m not the one who started with the Romanian. Who’s rude now?” Maturity, thy name is Stefan.

As Ileana walked to the kitchen he started behind her but turned when Cole asked to help. “Nah,” he grinned widely but the warmth didn’t quite meet his eyes. “You’re the guest. You should sit.” Even if the question hadn’t been directed at him, he doubted Illy would have said something much different than that. He gestured to the table and for Cole to take a seat before asking over his shoulder, “Do you need any help?” It was a small peace offering.

"I only started because you're a terrible roommate," Ileana retorted. If there was a Maturity Olympics, Ileana and Stefan would be rivals for the gold. Ileana waved Cole off a little and beamed at him, "I got it all under control."

She didn't even bother to answer Stefan as she disappeared in to the kitchen to gather plates and utensils. She brought them back out and started setting the table before she told Stefan, "Can you just go turn off the stove for me?"

Stefan's smile might not have been genuine, but at least he was making an effort. It was all either of them could do, really. Cole shrugged but relented with a smile, making his way to the table and taking a sit. He still didn't feel quite right, just sitting there doing nothing, but he managed.

Maybe learning a few basic words of Romanian - if that was even the language they were speaking in the first place - might not be such a bad idea, though. For future reference.

Another scoff and a laugh, still the same shit eating grin tugging at his lips at her remark and Cole's lack of participation in the conversation. He didn't even bother to complain or argue when she ignored his initial question and then proceeded to demand things of him later. But as much as he would've loved to continue on pointedly not talking to her guest, he knew it would have to end sometime. He turned off the oven and made sure to hurry back to the dining room, in case more gazing happened in his absence.

"So where are you from, Cole?" The question was innocent enough, just a bit of polite and boring conversation. When he noticed his accent slipping heavier than usual - more likely due to his side conversation with Illy and his general laziness - he didn't stop to correct it. If it bothered or ostracized Cole even further, well, that was his problem.

Ileana decided that after Cole left, she was going to strangle Stefan. If not strangle him, then make him turn into a frog and make frog's legs. To distract herself from murder, Ileana finished setting out everything and when she brushed past Cole she let her hand linger on his shoulder. A little bit of comfort, but it was good enough.

She hurried between the kitchen and the dining room, bringing out a few side dishes. She finally brought out the main course, setting it on the table before she practically flopped in to her chair. "There we go," she said with a smile, "Bon Appetit."

Cole didn't mind Stefan's accent - as long as what was being said was in English he didn't feel like such an outsider. He threw a quick smile at Ileana before turning back to the other man, relaxing slightly at the question. Where he was from, now that was something he could work with.

"South Boston. It wasn't the greatest, where I was raised, but I didn't mind it." He glanced up when Ileana finally sat down, grinning. "Looks great."

"So you moved here by yourself? No family nearby? Or some friends?" No one to disapprove of his current girlfriend? While Stefan didn't relish the idea of anyone disapproving of Illy, he felt slightly put out that it seemed he was the only one who had a problem with this pairing.

"Smells great too," Stefan added, almost sliding into his seat. A quick pause and he sat down next to Ileana, and then scooted his chair away from her slightly. "Just in case you get any bright ideas with your fork," he muttered to her softly but there was a grin at the corner of his mouth as he served himself his portion.
