Who: Boyd, Hannah and James
What: Dancing? That might turn out to be a euphemism.
Where: A club where no one in Bellum will see them
When: After Shane went insane. Thank you, Trenton.
Warnings: Watch this space.

It had taken all of sixty seconds for Shane to show up in the catacombs and almost kill someone; someone who had no chance of hurting her in that particular moment. It was all claws and fear, all over again.

Boyd couldn't handle it.

She'd taken enough drugs to knock her out for over 24 hours, and then she'd woken and messaged Hannah. A long shower followed, and then she'd dressed. The corset was pink, and it clasped in the front, and she wore nothing beneath it. It bared her stomach and the Italian word tattooed under her navel in dark, blood red. Her jeans sat low on her hips, and the top button was open. She finished it all off with innocent flip flops, her toenails painted a dark, blood red to match the tattoo on her skin.

By the time she knocked on Hannah's door, she had already had one flute of champagne, and she was determined to have a good time. She wanted to wash everything away, to get so exhausted she couldn't move, and she trusted her friend to be there with her through it.

Hannah hadn't been out anywhere that involved dancing since her last year of high school. It had only been once or twice, on nights when friends piled into cars armed with fake IDs and actually managed to find a place they could get in. She'd laughed along with everyone else, but drinking was never really her thing and she preferred to dance with her group of girls rather than the guys who treated them like some kind of prey to be hunted.

It wasn't a stretch to say that she had no idea what to wear, never mind the fact that the thought of dancing made her feel hopelessly awkward. It was times like these that she didn't feel her age at all. Still, after hours spent digging through her closet, she managed to find an off the shoulder top that satisfied her at least somewhat, paired with jeans and strappy sandals. Her hair was messy-wavy and loose about her shoulders, and she was asking herself if this was really a good idea when the knocking started. Well, whether it was or it wasn't, there was no time to change her mind now.

She pulled open the door, nudging Gabriel back with her foot as she managed to slip through into the hallway and close it behind her. "Hi." Hannah tried to mask her worry as she studied Boyd. "So where are we going?"

Boyd slid both her hands into her friend's, and she tugged the other girl forward and she kissed her cheek. She wasn't drunk, and she wasn't high, and she smiled a little as soft skin pressed to soft skin. "I just wanna go where there's music, and where we gotta scream too loud to be heard to talk, and where no one thinks about anythin' but the way the music feels coursin' through their veins," she said, and then she stepped back and tugged on Hannah's hands. "You look real pretty," she said, her gaze sliding to Hannah's shoulder and then back up to the tousled blonde hair.

She was relatively satisfied that Boyd seemed fine, and told herself that she could stop worrying for one night. "Well, I don't think we'll have a hard time finding anywhere like that." Hannah let herself be tugged forward, glancing down at herself and shrugging reflexively. "Thanks. So do you." She paused, actually looking at what her friend was wearing. "I like that top."

Boyd smiled, and she tugged Hannah to her again and kissed her cheek, using that as a way to thank her for the compliment. Then she kept one hand warm in Hannah's and pulled her toward the elevator.

It complied, did the elevator, and Boyd pushed the button for the first floor, even as she tugged Hannah's hair over her shoulder, toying with the ends as she talked. "Things went real bad with Shane," she admitted, "and I wanna just forget for tonight," she said, slipping her hand down to Hannah's hip and smiling.

Boyd's affectionate nature had stopped striking her as strange a while ago, and now it seemed almost natural. The elevator got a wary stare, but she stepped on in the hope that it would actually do what it was supposed to. The news that things had gone real bad wasn't very helpful in her attempt to relax, but she forced herself to not overreact.

"Oh." Don't ask what happened, don't ask what happened. "I know what it feels like to want to forget," she admitted, and that was enough to keep her from pursuing the topic any further. Floor after floor passed, and although the elevator slowed, it didn't outright stop at the wrong floor. "Anyway, forgetting can be good." Hannah decided right then that she would make sure that Boyd had a good time, at least. There was only a faint sense of uncertainty at the hand on her hip, but it was affection and Boyd was her friend - the closest one she'd had in a while, not to mention the fact that it did help with the relaxation attempts.

When the elevator door opened behind them, Boyd's hand slipped from Hannah's hip to her stomach, and she led her friend out of their elevator and out of the building lobby. It took a few minutes for them to hail a cab, and Boyd casually tucked the blonde strands (that were blowing against Hannah's cheek in the night air) behind her friend's ear.

The cab, once it pulled to a stop in front of them, made her smile gratefully, and she crawled into the warm darkness before her friend. "You have any idea what you want out of life?" she asked, casual but interested - obviously something she'd been thinking about.

The night air was surprisingly refreshing, and she couldn't help but take a deep inhale before exhaling softly. When was the last time she'd actually gone out anywhere after dark? The city was nice like this, all lit up and... awake. She didn't even mind having to wait for a cab, smiling absently as Boyd tucked her hair behind her ears.

"What do I want out of life?" Hannah frowned as she climbed into the cab after her, surprised by the question. "I... I'm not sure. I was looking into enrolling in college, but after that..." She trailed off, considering. "I'd like to work with animals. Veterinary school would be too expensive, and I'm not sure I have the grades anyway, but there are other things I can do." She shrugged. "I want to see things, instead of staying in one place forever. Get out of my comfort zone, even if it takes time. What about you? What is it you want out of life?"

Boyd listened, surprised. She hadn't known Hannah was interested in animals, and it made her realize just how little she knew about her friends. She was always so wound up in what was happening in her own life, that she wasn't always aware of what was gong on with the people she cared about most. "There's lots you can do," she said encouragingly, meaning it. Hannah was exceptionally sweet and compassionate; there was no one better qualified to take care of animals, in Boyd's opinion.

"I want-" she started, going quiet a moment before continuing. "I want to able to wake up and figure out what I want out of life," she said, realizing that sounded like a non-answer. She looked out the window at the city passing them by (she'd given directions to the driver), and her expression went wistful. "I just want life to let me catch up and figure it out," she admitted.

Hannah hadn't realized that Boyd didn't know about her soft spot for animals, and even now she wasn't completely aware of it. She did smile, though, when she told her there was a lot she could do - it was a lot more helpful than most people were. She appreciated the fact that she had to be realistic, but there was a distinct line between that and negativity, which was something she was trying to get away from. "I guess I'm still trying to figure things out right now."

She nodded, understanding Boyd's answer more than she'd expected. "It will. It always does," she added, covering the redhead's hand with her own.

Boyd squeezed her friend's hand and as the club came into view, she grinned. She'd been here once before when she'd first moved to New York from Savannah (she'd come looking for Luka). It was dark inside, the music was decidedly of the dance-trance variety, and the club was littered with beds in dark places, the soft surfaces replacing all the standard bar seating.

She tugged Hannah out of the cab, and she grinned as she heard the music. There would be no wolves here, no one tearing into anything with claws. Just her, her friend, and the music.

She grinned, bounced a little on her heels, and she tugged Hannah toward the bouncer.

Hannah had seen the club a few times in passing, but she'd never actually gone in - partly because she thought going to clubs alone was just asking for trouble, and partly because it was the sort that always managed to intimidate her. Now, though, it didn't seem so bad - especially with Boyd at her side.

She was still hesitant as she got out of the cab, although she did feel a rush of unexpected anticipation. The bouncer eyed them both - Hannah knew she looked younger than she actually was, and Boyd was actually younger than her - but the redhead clearly wasn't the sort who got turned away often. She barely managed to start pulling her ID out before they were inside, and suddenly she was surrounded by loud music and... were those beds? Why were there beds? Maybe it was just an alternative to seating or something.

The music was ideal. While James had never been to this particular club, she was quickly deciding that it was one of her favorites. Raw shots of Patron at the bar and enough bass coming from the speakers to rattle the fillings loose from your teeth. She'd arrived directly from work, arm-in-arm with a coworker(who was now lost in the crowd), with the shared knowledge that stripperwear also functioned as clubwear. In the rare glimpses of colored light, the shimmer of her gold shorts and gartered fishnets was right at home. The ripped Culture Club t-shirt might have been an odd contrast, but it's careless confidence worked for her. There was still glitter and hairspray in the endless tide of her dark hair, and the skin that was visible was dewed with well-earned sweat when she broke free from the gather of dancers. With her arms above her head and spinning ecstatic on pointed heels, a dozen sets of eyes followed James, lured by the magic of her movement. She was impervious to them all, so enraptured in the music and what it pulled from her, that when she slid up to the bar, it was with a smile that bordered on high. After taking another shot and swiping one of their cute little foil party masks from a basket at the end of the bar, she was drifting back into the crowd. A sway, and a spin, and a bewitching laugh.

Boyd pulled Hannah to the bar, and she slipped off her sneakers as she ordered them both lemon drops. She hadn't even managed to get the order out before a couple of local college boys offered to make it a double, and Boyd slipped her fingers through Hannah's soft blonde hair as she agreed. She crawled up onto a stool and then onto the bar, sitting in front of her friend as they waited for the drinks, pretending to listen to what the boys were saying, even though she didn't much care.

She tugged Hannah back between denim-spread thighs (her friend's back against her own chest), and she leaned forward and whispered close and loud in Hannah's ear to be heard over the music. "Ain't it grand?" she asked, petting Hannah's bare shoulders as the shots were handed to them.

The lemon drop slid down her throat like liquid sugar, and she accepted the offer of another set of doubles for them, and when the boys handed them both tiny foil masks of their own, she accepted hers with a giggle.

The entire thing felt surreal, but not in a bad way - the music probably helped with that, loud enough to chase away any thoughts and worries she might have had and leave a pleasant sort of buzz behind. She was glad that Boyd ordered their drinks, since she'd never even heard of half the things people ordered over the pulse of music. She wasn't entirely trusting of the college boys who decided to pipe up, so she settled on copying Boyd in pretending to listen to what they were saying.

Hannah couldn't help but watch some of the people dancing as Boyd tugged her back, envious of women who moved with a smooth confidence she could only dream of. Was it grand? Well, it was certainly something, but she turned her head to the side and grinned. "Yeah," she laughed, her voice swallowed up by the noise.

She hadn't expected the shots to taste good, but the taste was unfamiliar as well and it drew out a choked laugh once she'd downed them. It was with the faintest hint of hesitation that she took her own mask, but when they boys leaned forward and shouted something about dancing, he glanced back at her friend for confirmation or refusal. She knew she was being a terrible follower, but she had practically no experience with this kind of thing.

From the dance floor, her perception was skewed in colors of green and gold. Lights swirled from the ceiling like hail from UFO's. All around her echoed the laughter of debauched hedonists, it vibrated through the goldmine of her skin and left her laughing right along with them.

James had always been able to move well, having learned how to point her toes in ballet flats before she could so much as walk. But this was different, she was molten energy and the dancers in her immediate vicinity were transfixed to enough of a degree that it would have been unsettling if James had been more sober. It reminded her a little of being on stage; the customers with their wide, glassy eyes begging to buy her drinks or a new car, maybe get her a good deal on a home loan or free stock advice, anything, anything at all, what did she want?

When somebody stopped James to ask her name, the siren dropped that cheap gold mask over her eyes with a smile that said she'd never tell. And then it was back across the dance floor all over again.

Boyd had grinned at the boys, demanded two more drinks, and then she'd slid down from the bar, body sliding against Hannah's as she moved. She wrapped her arms around her friend's waist from behind as she walked her toward the boys and the throng of bodies moving rhythmically.

On the crowded dance floor, it was impossible to keep from touching and being touched, and Boyd twirled at the freedom the drink and the music offered. As the boys sandwiched her and Hannah in between, she laughed and tugged her friend free into the crowd with a coquettish glance over her shoulder.

She kissed Hannah then, unthinking, a press of lips and then a happy laugh. The other masked woman (James) was within view, and Boyd pressed a kiss to Hannah's shoulder and pointed toward her. "She can dance. Let's go meet her," she said, butterfly drawn to a flame and more than willing to take her pretty, sweet blonde friend along for the adventure.

Considering the fact that Hannah wasn't much of a drinker, the alcohol went a long way to soften most of her reservations. Dancing with a couple of college boys suddenly didn't seem like such a bad idea, and not even the inevitable closeness was enough to make her refuse. What she'd told Boyd wasn't a lie - she wasn't that good of a dancer, but there was a rhythm to follow and she fell into it easily enough, although she matched Boyd's laugh and followed her into the crowd when she tugged at her hand. There was no commitment here, and she liked that; nothing was permanent.

The kiss made her smile, and she followed her friend's gaze to the masked woman. She was immediately both envious and awed, and it seemed as though she was unapproachable. Almost.

"Okay," she agreed, not needing Boyd's lead this time as she approached the woman.

The music's transition was flawless, there was never a break to be found between the beats. Just an endless, whirling rush of bass and words that uselessly echoed into one another. James knew that she should have been exhausted, having worked a lengthy shift before even coming by this club, but she wasn't. There was invigoration to be found at every turn, in the arms of men and women. With every chorus, she was dancing with somebody new, never sticking around quite long enough to finish an entire song.

She'd just broken free from being sandwiched by a couple when she locked eyes with the blond. From behind the gold of her skimpy mask, it was almost difficult to tell what color James' eyes were, they just as well might have been black.

"Hey," she murmured while colored lights splashed over them in a roar of red and blue. There was no way that the word carried over the music, it was just lip reading from here.

Boyd noticed Hannah's interest in the other woman, and she noticed the other woman's return interest. Her grin turned mischievous, and she nudged her friend toward the woman with the skimpy mask and the sinuous body.

She stopped in front of the unknown woman, letting her own blue eyes dart along her body with drunken interest, and she pressed Hannah forward between them. Her hand was resting on Hannah's hip, and she pushed the blonde's hair aside, baring her shoulder. Then with perfectly sober intent, she kissed Hannah's shoulder, while still looking at the unknown, masked woman.

An invitation.

Emboldened by the alcohol and music, she almost felt like an entirely different person; usually she would have stuck to the sidelines in a situation like this, a spectator among many. It gave her a thrill to know that she managed to garner the masked woman's attention, and her smile was lacking in its usual sugary-sweet innocence.

Hannah couldn't make out the woman's voice, but a sort of subtle knowledge recognized the movement of her lips as a greeting. The lights made it hard to focus, yet at the same time managed to highlight the other woman's skin. She was aware of Boyd behind her, nudging her forward, and at the kiss to her shoulder she closed her eyes briefly before returning her gaze to the masked woman. "Hey," she echoed, even though it was pointless to even try talking. A moment passed, without motion, before she smiled again and swayed to the pulsating music, beyond the point of structured thought and approaching reckless abandon with surprising ease.

They were near the epicenter of the swirling vortex, the gravitational middle. James remained nearly still while dozens of people mingled and danced in her periphery. She saw the blond say something, but the word was lost between them. James tilted her head, and the glitter in her hair made the movement holographic. Sensing that the word had been something in the family of hello, the bare frame of her mouth was drawn into a simpering grin. Eyebrows hiked at the fall of copper-spun hair against blondie's shoulder as the redhead deposited a kiss to the woman's skin. The smile bubbled quickly into a laugh, and this time it was audible over a lulling moment of bass.

Then, with the playful abandon that this evening seemed to have imbibed in her, James stepped in close, and was tall enough in these heels to drop the masked line of her eyes over the blond's before she kissed her. She didn't press in close or run her hands over the stranger, and only their mouths touched. Still, that grin was in place, even as she ran her tongue between their union, as if this was some grand game she'd just invented, and she was pleased with it.

Boyd watched the kiss between the dark haired woman and her blonde friend, and she slid her hand down Hannah's back and lower, over curves and fabric, the touch intimate and caressing. She slid a hand around Hannah to touch the brunette's jaw, even as she kissed her friend; it was an acknowledgment. Sex was something Boyd knew, and desire was something she knew even better. This was desire.

She backed away, her fingers slipping from the brunette's jaw, and she kissed the nape of Hannah's neck, lips brushing soft against the slightly sweat-damp skin there. "Let go," she whispered to her friend, and then she let herself be pulled back into the press of bodies - close enough to watch, but far enough to give them privacy.

The fact that they were practically in the middle of the dance floor didn't seem to matter anymore, and to all but the most keen of eyes she looked as though she belonged there just as much as anyone else. She watched the woman's reactions carefully, any confusion she might have felt hidden carefully beneath a mask of her own creation.

Her laugh was audible for a moment, long enough for Hannah to seize it as an encouraging sign, but the kiss effectively cut off any plans for what her next move would be. The dark haired woman was taller, and it was instinct rather than experience that caused her to arch slightly against her lips. Thoughts too faint to understand swirled in the back of her mind, where she was also aware of Boyd's hands and lips against her neck. The turn of her head was slight, almost unnoticeable under the lights - but it was there.

She shifted closer, managing to keep a bit of space between herself and the other woman, angling her body slightly to the side as her own tongue slid out to meet the other.

There was no privacy to be had here, but intimacy in the middle of a dance floor was not such a strange occurrence for evening hangouts. The blond and James drew some attention, as women kissing in public could sometimes do, but the distraction was minor, at best. There was so much darkness, so many swarming lights, that people quickly returned to their dancing or their drinks. Pebbles in a stream, the party resumed all around them, if it had ever really lulled to begin with.

When the kiss was returned, as if there had been any doubt it would be, James found the woman's hip and pulled her a little closer. She lifted her eyes, and caught a glimpse of red hair somewhere on the outskirts, but realized that the girl's companion was no longer amongst them. The kiss wove dangerously south, taking up brief territory on the blond's jaw before skewing toward her ear with a whisper(that was more like a shout, considering the music).

"Is that your girlfriend?"

Boyd watched the intimacy a moment longer from the crowd, feeling a soft pang of familiar loss, and then she blended back into the crowd, letting the press of bodies guide her to the door and out into the sobering night and home.

She wasn't inexperienced enough to not expect some sort of attention, but strangely enough she didn't mind it - partly because it was fleeting at best, and partly because she was nothing more than a stranger here. The dark haired woman didn't know her, and neither did anyone else who slid past with a drink or happened to be dancing nearby. They were just two more bodies glowing under the lights, and it felt good to be anonymous for once.

A gasp too soft to be heard slipped out when the woman pulled her closer, and she tilted her head to the side almost lazily as lips brushed against her jaw.

"My girlfriend?" Hannah was momentarily alert enough to process the question fully, but a quick scan of the crowd told her that Boyd was gone. She was surprised, even bordering on confused as to why her friend would leave, but it didn't last long. The pull towards that warm alcohol-induced buzz was too strong, and she turned back to the woman with a coy smile and a shake of her head. Fingers pressed against the tawny skin of the other woman's arm, she stretched forward to respond with a simple whisper of her own. "No."

When the blond woman admitted that her companion had not been a girlfriend, James just laughed, easing her lips back toward the kiss and finding that it tasted of sweet lemons, and maybe vodka. "Good," her murmur was swallowed up between them, amused and playful. Not that James had ever had a problem with dismissing girlfriends, or boyfriends for that matter, entirely.. but it made things easier when they weren't to be considered at all.

The kissing progressed, and without ever exchanging names, the two danced for a surprising quartet of songs. And only then, finally, after she'd been tasting the girl for some twenty minutes, did James release her. The dark glow of her eyes still behind that mask, not that Hannah would have had any real reason to recognize her anyway. James ran a hand down the front of the woman's body, more curious than possessive, as she leaned in for a new whisper, "Thanks for the dance.."

Then, she was gone. A flicker of gold and chocolate, slipping between beams of club lights and the gyrations of new dancers to be explored.
