Vlad was quite good at playing devil's advocate - too good, in some cases. He could take the side against what Max was saying, that there was a social morality that human begins had to adhere to in order to live in society; but he didn't want to argue. If people saw things the way his friend did, he wouldn't have to live with secret upon secret piled inside him. He supposed that laws stemmed from Christianity and their ten commandments, and since he was scornful of anything religious, it didn't mean much to him.
"There is a social morality, yes - but it changes with the time and place. Look back centuries ago, when kings reigned supreme. Their word was law, and if a king wanted to behead someone then it was done; and it was believed to be 'right'. The people with power decide what is and is not moral." He grinned, his former seriousness vanishing as he finished his drink and signaled the waitress for another. "All that means is that people like you and I need to be in power for what we do to be considered universally moral. Or we could continue to live by our own rules, and society be damned." It was contrary to what he was trying to do, but Max didn't need to know that he was attempting to control his blood lust.
