The plaque on the wall says:

Tie up the canine criminal, detective,
though he must be furry and ineffective.
We'll not force a confession in this chamber aside,
Not from the lucky daughter of Dickens' bride,
But Miss Good, remember your old ties,
Mind your manners and tell no lies,
Or there will be an unfortunate consequence
In the form of small, hungry little eyes.

This room resembles a medieval subterranean dungeon. Chains hang from the ceiling. There is rotting straw strewn on the roughly-hewn cobblestones, and what little light filters through the bars at the very top of the room, some fifty feet above, does little to alleviate the gloom. On the walls various tools of medieval restraint and torture hang: ropes, whips, thumb screws, etc. Many are stained with old blood and rusting with exposure. There is an iron maiden watching from one corner, a rack in the British style along one wall. Whoever designed the room was not historically accurate: there are devices notable for their use in earlier or later periods, and they're mixed together at random. The designer knew enough not to include modern handcuffs or zip ties, however, and the occupants of the room while find little to recognize from the last two centuries.

There are rats, and yes, they're hungry. If Faith tells any lie at all, one will abruptly get hungry enough to attack.

A grate in the roof will appear and unlock when the appropriate conditions are met.

Eliot was pretty sure this building had a vendetta against him. With the job and the stresses it brought with it out of his life, he was finally settling into a normal sleep rhythm. Or at least he would have been, if it hadn't been for the random middle-of-the-night insanity that he constantly seemed to land in. Why the hell couldn't these trips happen during a normal hour of the day?

Unfortunately, there was no one within close vicinity for Eliot to grumble to, so he took to examining his surroundings instead. He was still wearing the generic white undershirt and pants he had gone to bed in, and he was still barefoot. The cold stones under his feet and the still air suggested that he was underground somewhere, but the rocks were unlike the ones in the catacombs under Bellum Letale. The room was furnished with torture devices of all types and from different periods of history; whoever had set this place up was clearly more interested in maximizing options rather than preserving historical accuracy. A quick survey showed no modern equipment around, but that wasn't surprising.

Eliot noticed a plaque on the wall, and ducked under the dangling chains to get a better look. Once he got close enough, the lettering was just visible in the dim light that filtered through the top of the room. It was some sort of a quest game, from the look of it. Several people were expected to play parts to earn their freedom, which meant more of the buildings tenants would be dropping in any second. He knew met one of them briefly, the wolf, but he had no idea who the two women mentioned were. He'd find out soon enough, it seemed.

Shane was awake at midnight. He hadn't been sleeping much.

He'd been sitting on the floor in the middle of Ella's trashed living room, amongst some untouched and some toppled furniture, his eyes closed, listening to sounds in the apartments around him. It kept him from growing bored, and honed his already keener than human ears as people scurried around in their little rat holes.

He didn't even notice he was somewhere else at first, until he noted that the sounds had stopped. He opened his eyes to a room similarly dim to the one he'd been in. Ah, but here was a real prison-not some joke of a woman's apartment dolled up to pretend that was one. They'd found him the genuine article. Fucking predictable.

He glanced from the rack to the manacles to the rope, to the bars in the ceiling. Only after he'd taken in the room did he look over the people, still sitting on the floor, unmoving aside from his eyes.

He said nothing, eyes settling on Eliot, the only one moving. They were steady, and cold, and unblinking.

Darcy's night had gone pretty smoothly. She'd had a dinner date with some college friends and had made it back to her apartment before 10. She had promptly taken a shower, put on her nightshirt and bathrobe and had settled in to watch The Notebook for the thousandth time.

As her luck would have it she dozed off right as Ally was about to take off on her little pre-wedding romp and when she woke up she realized that she wasn't anywhere near her apartment. Her feet were covered with light blue slippers, she still had her black night shirt and her big white terry cloth bathrobe was wrapped snuggly around her. It was definitely not how one would want to go out and be seen in public, but at least she was dressed.

She looked around quickly the panic was clear on her face, she had no idea how any of this could have happened. She'd heard plenty of weird things about the building since she'd gotten here, but this took the cake. "What's going on?" she asked anyone willing to answer and she was trying to sound just as brave as she could possibly sound.

"Another one of the building's tricks," Eliot replied, without taking his eyes of the plaque. "We have instructions to follow." He glanced at Shane out of the corner of his eye. "Following them is presumably the only way out." Under normal circumstances Eliot would never have jumped to such a conclusion without carefully examining every corner of the room. But Bellum Letale was a strange place, and mind games such as this one seemed right up its alley.

Eliot forced himself to concentrate on the task at hand, desperately trying to push away the associations brought up from his own history. This is different, he told himself, harshly. Nobody needs to get hurt.

"You might want to take a look for yourselves." Eliot was still sleepy and grumpy and in absolutely no mood to tell Shane that the building wanted him chained up. He had met neither of the two young ladies before, so it would be easier to let them sort out their half of the riddle themselves.

It was a few long moments before Shane finally got to his feet and walked over to the plaque, scanning it impassively. 'The canine criminal.' Was that how the building quantified him now?

'Furry and ineffective.' That was clear enough. He looked over at Eliot with a hint of contempt and a small smile. "Are you the detective?"

Darcy raised her eyebrows and walked over to the wall and started reading. It was easy enough to figure out who she was, though Estella was nothing she wanted to talk about at the moment. She wasn't sure she'd actually have to do much at all, none of it was making any sense and she just wanted to go home.

She looked back between them all and chewed on her lip for a minute, "Lucky daughter of Dickens' bride present," she said raising her hand just a bit.

Her attention was mostly focused on the two men in the room (which wasn't new if she was honest), but one was a detective and was a canine criminal. She was starting to get nervous and she shifted her weight from one foot to the other.

"My counterpart is." Eliot didn't bother adding that he was a retired private investigator, as it was clear that the task at hand was more interested in who each of their 'fables' was.

He nodded to the blue-eyed brunette, before turning to the other girl. "It doesn't specify whether or not you have to say anything, just that you can't lie." Seemed simple enough. It was the first part of the riddle that was more concerning.

Eliot turned to Shane, his face devoid of either apprehension or concern. "Can you change at will?" Might as well cut straight to the chase. The sooner they got out of here, the sooner they could all get back to their own lives.

It didn't seem to bother Shane in the least that the riddle identified him as a criminal. In the eyes of the law, that was what he was, after all. "Never tried," he said. The only times he'd changed so far had been spur of the moment, mostly accidental, and somewhat catastrophic. "If I can, you should know there's no guarantee that I'll cooperate. When I'm a wolf, I think like one, and I'm not going to be over-excited about the idea of being tied up."

Darcy looked between the two of them unable to really believe that this was actually happening. However one thing that was particularly plaguing to her was that she was pretty sure she was not only in a room with strangers, one of whom was a furry criminal, was that she was pretty sure there were rats. She hated rats.

"So what she doesn't lie, you tie up him after he turns into a wolf, and then what?"

Eliot pursed his lips and frowned. "That makes sense." He had no control over his body when Holmes took over, it stood to reason that the same was true for Shane and the wolf. Eliot obviously could not overpower the wolf, which meant he would have to outsmart it. Under normal circumstances and access to his usual resources, this would not have been a problem. It would be slightly more difficult with nothing except medieval torture instruments at hand.

He looked at the girl and shrugged. "If we manage to follow the instructions, my theory is that we will either be let out or given more directions. There's no way out of this room. Whatever brought us here is most likely the only thing that can get us out."

The way Shane was as a wolf when it wasn't the moon wasn't the same as when it was. He wasn't The Wolf, the Big Bad one, just a wolf yet still himself. The instincts came with the package, unfortunately.

He looked over at the girl, glancing up and down her. He'd never seen her before, and seemed only to just be noticing she was in the room. There was something a little dangerous and a little on edge about him-and why he had yet to mention that he'd been locked in a room for the part four days (and that this wasn't much of a change) was anyone's guess. He looked it, though.

"It's worth a try, isn't it?"

Darcy felt uneasy about the whole thing but she wasn't much for taking charge of a situation that she didn't understand. So she stood there quietly not really looking at any of them. She tried her hardest to look past everything that was going on and get herself as mentally checked out of the situation as possible. She did manage to give a small nod in response to the consensus that they at least ought to give it a try.

Eliot turned face Shane full on. "I've never seen... the wolf. Do you have any suggestions? Things that worked in the past, maybe?" If Eliot was aware of the absurdity of asking a man how best to incapacitate himself, he didn't show it. As far as he was concerned, they were stuck in this place at the very least until they carried out he instructions. There was no use for pride or personal misgivings under these circumstances, and Eliot was not the type to try and placate someone just to spare their feelings.

"You could try knocking me out," he said, apparently unperturbed with the idea. "If you're going to try tying me up like that, your best bet is right after I'm finished changing." He flashed teeth in a mirthless sort of way, and moved away from the plaque and the other three people in the room.

"It hurts." He looked back. "And I wouldn't watch if you're squeamish."

Was this really going to be her life now? Turning into a brat once a month and now being locked in a strange room where some strange boy was going to turn into a wolf and someone else was going to tie him up? Great.

"Alright." She said not really sure what else to do. She didn't feel squeamish, more than anything she felt curious, but she wasn't going to admit that. And she certainly wasn't going to make him feel self conscious. She folded her arms across her chest and did a pivot on her foot and turned to stare at the opposite wall, she had no idea what half the stuff in here was but she really didn't want to know. She did make a bit of a gasp and a jump when she saw another rat. This had to end soon.

Eliot considered telling the girls to stay close in case he ended up needing help, but decided against it. They were probably better off keeping their distance, at least as much as could be had in a dank dungeon. Once he was certain they were no longer looking, Eliot picked a pair of shackles off the wall and set his jaw. He would not be looking away when Shane changed; he needed to know what exactly it was that he had volunteered to tie down and possibly hurt.

He glanced over them briefly, and gave Eliot a faint smile. He'd regret watching, but that was his decision.

He knew exactly where the wolf was in him, more so now than a few weeks ago. The time he'd spent locked up had brought them closer together, so it was a simple thing to grab hold of everything savage and animal in him and let it overtake him the same way it did during fits of anger. He had claws and teeth nearly immediately, with a minimum of pain (he was so used to them now that they nearly felt normal). He pulled his shirt off, tossed that aside before the change hit him in earnest.

The sounds of it were ugly, the sight much more so. Bones bent and cracked, legs snapping at the knees to re-arrange themselves, a muzzle forming out of what had been a human face as fur spread over his body. He didn't scream. Not fighting it every step of the way as he did on the moon made a difference, but it still hurt, and short, bitten-off sounds of pain devolved into whimpers.

When it was done, he had just enough energy to kick away the pants he'd been wearing before wearily laying his head on the cool stone, eyes shut, panting for breath. A minute, and he'd be up. One blue eye opened and rolled toward Eliot, watching.

Darcy stood with her back turned, her eyes boring into the wall in front of her trying to ignore everything she heard, any curiosity she had was gone, she could imagine just from the sounds what was going on behind her. Once the terrible noises stopped and she was able to guess that what was done was done, she slowly started to turn around.

Her head tilted to the side a bit as she regarded the animal in front of her and then she looked over to Eliot, "Should I do anything? I've got a..." she paused, how was she supposed to explain it? "A knack for things?" she offered quietly. She didn't want to be a spectator to her own way out of this place, but she also didn't know what kind of help she could be. She knew the whole luck thing might be worth trying out, but she didn't know if it just had an "on" button. It was just as she said, a knack for things.

The transformation did not disgust or overwhelm Eliot. It was hideous and must have certainly been painful, but if it gave Eliot only a fraction of an idea of what Shane had to go through, that was enough.

"Just be ready," Eliot said over his shoulder. Ready for what, they had yet to see, but he wanted them to be alert.

He stepped forward carefully, in full sight of the wolf. He didn't want to surprise the beast, and needed to tie Shane down in this weakened state. "Alright, let's do this." He leaned forward decisively, clasping a shackle over the left paw before moving towards the right one.

He lifted his head, but otherwise didn't move, allowing himself to be shackled. Either due to restraint (since he did tense when Eliot came close) or exhaustion, he didn't fight back so much as pull back as Eliot shut the shackles, which were, oddly enough, just about the right size to keep a wolf in place.

The shackles clicked closed, and behind them, a door appeared where there had been nothing, edging open a few inches. Shane's eyes went from Eliot to Darcy-that had been more simple than expected-and he got up onto all for feet, eyes fixed on Eliot, waiting for him to unlock the shackles.

Darcy had no idea what she was supposed to be ready for, but she took her readiest stance and waited nervously for Eliot to shackle up the wolf. This definitely went on the list of things she never anticipated happening and more than that she was concerned that she was going to make a wrong move and mess the whole thing up. She looked over at the girl looking to see what she did, just in case.

Once Shane was shackled and the door appeared she felt just a bit better, maybe this would all end up alright after all. This was going far easier than anticipated and she had to wonder what the point of it all was. And if there wasn't a point, she didn't quite know how to feel about it at all. "Is that it? Now we undo those and we can leave?" she asked still quietly.

"Seems so."

Eliot was surprised that the door had shown up so quickly. It all just seemed to easy. Was this a test in how well tenants could follow directions? Or was this a test run, for something worse? Either way, they would be finding out soon enough.

Raising his hands in front of him to where the wolf could clearly see, Eliot bent back down to remove the shackles. They fell to the ground with a heavy clunk, their chains rolling on the stones before coming to a stop.

He turned to the girls. "I'll go through first." They did not know what was on the other side, and for some reason Eliot felt uncomfortable sending them into what could potentially be dangerous. "Wait until you hear back from me before following."

With one final nod to the wolf, Eliot stepped through the door... and into the lobby of Bellum Letale. "We're good!"

He got up. He didn't hang back and change again, or immediately run out. He waited until everyone else was out of the room, then loped out after, darting around the girls' legs and past Eliot, up the stairs, around and gone. Why he didn't stay back or change again right away was anyone's guess, but he didn't so much as look back as he went up the stairs, and didn't make a sound.
