It hadn't been that long since Nick had made his phone calls, but Tegan had perched on the very edge of her bed, still smoothing her hand over Nick's hair, humming to herself a bit without realizing that it was the song her mother used to hum to her when she was sick. The repetitive motion helped lull her into a content little daze, even though she was still concerned about Nick.
The knock on the outer door of the apartment surprised her, even though she'd been expecting something of the sort since Nick had called his siblings. She didn't want to disturb Nick when he looked like he might almost be asleep again, so she eased off the bed as carefully as she could, whispering, "Stay here. I'll be right back..." soft enough not to wake him if he had, in fact, drifted off again.
She padded through the apartment on bare feet, hoping that the knock hadn't woken either of her brothers, wincing at the loud voice that called out. She peered through the peephole first, seeing two people standing there with, she supposed, at least a passing resemblance to Nick. Without undoing the chain on the door, she opened it the few inches it allowed, biting her lip for a moment as she studied them.
