Watson had watched entire debacle with the Lion (seemingly) attacking nothing at all. Even with all evidence pointing to there truly being nothing there, his 'gift' - or Micah's gift, rather, Watson had no abilities of his own - told him there was someone present. Still, that someone could not be hurt if they could not be seen, and so he'd simply pressed back against the wall at a safe distance and watched with eyes that were both impressed and wary of the powers of this great building (and the beast before him).
When the young woman ran down (chased by a familiar wolf), he thought he (and his cane) were going to have to attempt to defend the woman from both a wolf and a lion. But then the lion roared at the wolf and Watson remained in the shadows. He would observe, unless there was danger. In which case, he would act. His dagger was at the ready, and he would be able to distract either beast long enough for the woman to flee, if it came to that.
He hoped it would not, and he very much wished he was home with Mary, a nice gin and tonic and slippers warmed by the fire.
