The pool and surrounding areas, moonrise.
Christian had been surprised to find the pool empty. The weather in the City had been tumultous ever since he arrived, and now that it had settled into a calm, cool night, he couldn't resist the urge to take a dip. He had earned the break, he was sure, what with all the furnishing and decorating. Every cover identity needed legwork to pass basic legitimacy tests, and with Daisy supposedly in the building, Christian needed to be perfect. She knew where he came from, what his favorite colors were, and just how much his family could afford to splurge. If convincing her that he was the same guy she knew meant renting out a penthouse he really didn't need and fixing it up lavishly, then so be it.
Where could she be, his Daisy Fitzhugh? Christian knew she wasn't his by any means, but he couldn't help but think of her possessively. Curiosity had pushed him into making the most reckless move he had ever conceived in his career as a con artist, so why stop now? Maybe he should just suck it up and call her parents. They would know her apartment number, and he would finally be able to stop torturing himself. Perfect.
The change hit him as he pulled himself over the side of the pool. One moment, water was streaming off him in rivulets, and the next, he was fully dressed and armed. He had no time to wonder where the swimming trunks had gone or where the quiver on his back and bow in his hand had come from, as he already taken a back seat in his own mind, an idle observer to everything that was about to unfold.
He felt another part of his brain take over - one that was somehow both clearly his own, yet a completely different person's. This other... man was the one who belonged in these clothes, whose fingers curled into grooves in the bow as if they had always belonged there. Christian did not know who this man was, but he could hear every thought and feel every emotion running through the stranger's mind. Presently they were divided between helping the King's impoverished subjects, and searching for the woman he loved.
