The tension in her shoulders that came when she asked her question visibly slipped away with his answer. ‘Fine’ was good. Considering what he had told her about Ella’s injuries, Helena was more than pleased that Ella was fine. When the car stopped at on the third floor she didn’t even bat an eyelash. It often stopped on three for her as well and she didn’t give it a second thought.
“I just can’t believe—” She cut herself off quickly for really, she should believe it. She didn’t like to think ill of people, often giving the benefit of the doubt over and over again, but she was often reminded that there were dangerous people living in the building. And if the warnings didn’t come from the man beside her, she only needed to look on the forums to hear what supposedly went on or what people were threatening to do. She often had to turn away from the vile things that anonymous posts often generated, but to know that they finally acted on their words, and against her dear friend, made Helena’s stomach turn.
“It was just a list. I mean, perhaps it seems so ridiculous since everyone guessed who we were long before it came out but...” She trailed off and shook her head. “It shouldn’t have been posted, regardless. I can understand the anger but to retaliate so violently...” More frustration, more sighs, and she leaned her head against his arm. “And they only targeted Ella?”
