Dr. Archer | The Invisible Man ([info]sneakingaround) wrote in [info]bellumlogs,

Who: Archer and Isobel, Archer and Benjamin, and Archer, Nick, and Hannah
What: Taking some cheek cell samples
Where: #102
When: The day after this post at various times
Warnings: Genetics technobabble, bad bedside manner, and speculation

Everything was, as far as he could tell for now, ready.  Archer had spent the last several hours arranging his makeshift laboratory within his apartment, and it had come across rather nicely.  The living room took the brunt of the lab, bordered on all walls with cheap tables that held shiny, expensive equipment.  There were two microscopes set up, a number of cardboard boxes containing clean beakers and flasks tucked beneath the tables, and a few metal tubs that were sealed up tightly.  On the far end of the room was a mini-fridge labeled "Not for Human Food Storage" on a piece of masking tape in black marker, which held god-knows-what.  Well, Archer knew, but he was much more tight-lipped than God.

Checking the large clock over the mini-fridge, Archer adjusted the lapel of his white laboratory coat and looked down at the three trays he had set out.  Three test subjects was a dismal number, and though it made his spirits sink, he reminded himself that he hadn't contacted everybody in Bellum Letale.  There would still be future subjects should he need them.  For the time being, he had to ensure that his three subjects remained as such instead of flaking out like that silly girl in #1007.

He sat down on a stool just inside his front door, inspecting the labels on each of his trays.  Each tray was labeled with a number to identify the subject.  #1202B would be 001, #906 would be 002, and #407 would be 003.  They had no way of identifying one another, and an unrelated person would not know which was which.  Each tray contained a sterile cotton swab and a sterile cap to slide it in, along with a vial of liquid for suspending the cells.  There were several other small vials in each as well, labeled with numbers and letters that only Archer would understand.

After fussing with his jacket yet again, Archer sat still and waited patiently for the first of his subjects to arrive.

How did one dress for supplying a doctor with a genetic sample? It seemed like a silly thing to worry over, and while Isobel never considered herself to be someone obsessed with her appearance, that didn't mean she liked going out looking like an orphan. So she settled on something casual, a pair of jeans and a fitted black knit shirt, black converse sneakers on her feet. The elevator was ignored in favour of the stairs as she ambled down the several floors it took to get to first floor.

And that's how she came to be standing in front of #102, one hand lifting to give a little knock on the door before stepping back to wait, hands clasped behind her back as she gazed up towards the ceiling. She wondered what the 'doctor' would be like. Was he old? Grey-haired? He hadn't sounded old in his post to her, but of course, people could be anyone they wanted in those sort of things.

"Hope I'm not too early," she murmured to herself, rocking back and forth on the heels and toes of her shoes, amusing herself with counting the stains in the ceiling tiles.

The knock at the door alerted him from his absent staring at the ceiling, and Archer stood. After adjusting his round spectacles and plucking once more at his coat, he moved to the door, unlocking and opening it in one swift motion.

He looked down at the young woman standing before him, his expression largely blank. After a moment's pause, he took a slight step back. "Hello. You must be the resident of nine-hundred six." He paused again, moving almost like a robot imitating human behavior. "Thank you again for agreeing to participate. Please come in." He stepped back, gesturing into his apartment with a broad sweep of his arm.

A brow arched at his response when he opened the door, quiet for a long while before her shoulders shrugged up slightly, taking entrance to the room as was offered. "I do have a name, you realise," she said once she was in his apartment, her eyes sweeping about to take in what details she could initially. "People tend to respond a lot better when you call them by it."

Taking her attention from the room, she turned to look back towards him, eyes sweeping up and down before finally settling on his face, her head cocked to the side slightly. "And you've already thanked me once, Jasper. Do you ever smile?" A change of topic, a twist to something she was a bit more comfortable with as she turned on the charm she had worked so hard to excel at. Though, judging by first look, the doctor wasn't the sort to be charmed by anything she could offer.

Still. Couldn't hurt to at least be sweet, could it?

As she entered, mentioning the use of her name, he shrugged. "I'm sure you do. But I have yet to learn it." And it was true. The forums were posted by room number, not name, and there was no resident directory that he could find. And Archer wasn't about to waste hours searching through the forums to find one study participant's name when said participant could simply share it at her leisure.

Closing the door behind them, he moved towards the trays, picking up the one labeled "002" and bringing it to the front. He glanced up at her, raising a brow slightly at her comment and question. "Do you ask this of every person you meet for the first time?" he replied loftily, reaching up to adjust his glasses as he fussed with the contents of the tray. "All people smile - I'm just not smiling now." Obviously.

He gestured to the chair beside the table, attempting a faint half-smile. "Please, take a seat."

"You could ask it, you know. I don't normally run around just telling people my name out of the blue. But that's hardly here, or there." She smiled brightly at him then, her eyes bright. "Isobel. Isobel Hughes. Since you asked so nicely." There was a laugh then, and she moved over towards where he had gestured for her to sit, taking a perch there with her legs crossed.

That attempt at a smile was certainly promising, but the awkwardness that seemed to surround him was more interesting. "No, not of everyone. Just of the ones where I wonder if their face might crack if they tried. It was just simple curiosity. You don't look like someone who smiles or laughs very often, that's all." Trailing off, her attention was drawn towards the tray he was fussing with, almost having to sit on her hands to keep from poking at it curiously. "You said this would be pretty simple, right?" she asked, glancing up towards him. "Not gonna hurt or anything?"

He could ask it. What a novel idea. Just as he was about to open his mouth to do just that - as if that were completely normal - Archer was cut off by the answer to his question. He paused. "Isobel. Alright."

As she sat down and began chattering, he felt his mind beginning to wander. In between her pleasantries and little prods at his sterile demeanor, Archer was thinking five steps ahead. He would take three samples for the sake of ensuring the he maintained usable DNA at all times. There were enough storage vials, and he could begin the cell lysis immediately. Picking up a paper stick, he glanced to her, shaking his head.

"This won't hurt at all. It'll be like brushing your teeth." Perhaps not the best analogy, but he had learned from his short time on the forum that these residents didn't understand most scientific procedures. "And yes, it's very simple. I'll open this paper sleeve, swab the cotton tip that's inside along the inside of your cheek. I would like to do this three times, if that's alright with you. And then I'll immerse the cells in a series of enzymes that will swell and then burst them so that I may expose their nuclear DNA. And then-" Just as he was about to gesture to the centrifuge across the room, he paused, realizing that this was meaningless.

"Ah, it doesn't matter." Shaking his head, he stood before her, holding up the swab in its sterile sleeve. "When you're ready, open your mouth wide."

Isobel gave him a flat expression as he trailed off with that shake of his head, and she felt a little indignant at how he had behaved. "We're not all stupid, you know. Just because I may not know much about what you're talking about doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to understand it a bit better." But it was her turn to shake her head, realising it probably wasn't the best conversation to get into right then. It was true that she wasn't the smartest person around, but she hated being talked down to like that.

But there was still the question as to why this was so curious and interesting to him. Coupling his curiosity with her own limited knowledge about everything that was going on in Bellum, Isobel opened her mouth for him, going so far as to stick her tongue out and saying 'aaaaah'. He could take all the samples he wanted from her, but there was another question she wanted to ask as soon as the samples were taken.

At her defensive comments, he paused. "I never said you were." And it was true, he didn't. Of course, he hadn't given her much benefit, either. Oh, the dangers of spending all your free time with machines!

He decided against trying to redeem himself, instead opening up the swab. "Thank you," he said as she opened her mouth, allowing a very small smile as she stuck out her tongue and said "aaah.' "I'm not that kind of doctor." However, he didn't correct her. Instead, he quickly and efficiently swabbed the inside of her cheek three times, storing one of the swabs in a sterile plastic case and swirling the other two in separate vials of clear enzymes. After capping the vials and placing the used swabs in a safe container, he looked back to her, removing the non-latex gloves he had pulled on while preparing the tray.

"That's it," he finished, running a hand through his hair. "Painless, wouldn't you say?"

The look in her eyes said "Oh, I know you're not that kind of doctor. Humour me. I'm trying to be cute." But nothing more was said until he was done, tongue rubbing against the places he had swabbed as she closed her mouth. It had been rather simple and definitely painless. Probably less exciting than she had been hoping.

"Quite," Isobel answered after a moment, switching the position of her legs as she shifted in her seat. "That's it? You get everything you need from just... that?" It seem so... anti-climatic, nothing like the movies made such procedures and events out to be. "And that's going to get you everything you need to know about us, I take it?" It was interesting enough, though there was still that one question.

A soft hum escaped her and she gave him a smile. "There was something I was wondering, though. What are you going to do if I end up changing like some of the others here...?" Isobel asked, head canted to the side. "Won't that wreck whatever it is you're trying to find out here?"

As he cleaned up the tray and set it aside, he shrugged. "I may request another sample later as corroboration. Scientific research requires replication for something to be valid, so it's a lot of doing the same thing several times and hoping that your techniques are as error-proof as possible." Straightening up, he adjusted his glasses, looking down at her as she asked her question.

He got a briefly sour look, though it wasn't because he was irritated with her. Oh no. He was irritated with this variable. He sighed. "I recognize that this may happen, and if it does, I will lose you as my control subject." He paused. "However." His expression brightened just slightly, though it was still fairly dim. "If that happens, I now have a sample from you before the change and will take one afterwards, which will give me a unique comparison, and could make you extremely valuable."

"You're capable of making errors?" Isobel asked with a hint of a smile, teasing him. "From first glance, I thought you'd be perfection personified. Of course, I could be mistaken... but if there are more things that you need. Just... let me know, hmm?" One hand fiddled with the ends of her hair as he cleaned up his mess, and then their gazes met when he answered her question.

"Hmmmm..." She shifted on the chair slightly, adjusting her seat once more before simply smiling up towards him. "Make the best out of a situation?" There was a moment of silence, and then she leaned forward, giving him a little poke on the arm closest to her. "Perhaps you ought to take a sample of your own DNA. From the sound of things, everyone who comes to this building has been affected. It's just a matter of when, so wouldn't you want to be prepared for your own 'change'?"

There was something about this girl that was very tiring. She wasn't exactly busy, and she wasn't exactly demanding, but she seemed so energetic in such a quiet way. Rubbing the bridge of his nose slightly, he nodded at her second question - the one about his ability to make mistakes was irrelevant, he knew - and dropped his hand to look at her. "Of course. Thank you."

Just as he was about to show her out, she leaned forward in her seat - why wasn't she standing? - and prodded his arm with a small smile. He paused, staring at her. His back stiffened slightly. "That...is a valid idea," he replied slowly. Of course it was. He should have thought of it. "However, I'm not sure how valid the results would be should I decide to publish. If I experimented on myself, it's possible that there was some form of...contamination." He wasn't sure if this was true or not, but it sounded good enough. It was so difficult to think that one of his participants had thought of something he hadn't!

A hum and a smile were the initial response Archer got from Isobel, but that was hardly enough for the blond to leave on. "Of course. Contamination..." She rose to her feet then, giving him a nod of her head.

"You're capable of mistakes. Of course there could be contamination! I just thought it would be interesting... even if you chose not to include your personal results in anything you might show other people." A shrug of her shoulders, and she was already heading towards the door, her smile beatific. Her back was given to him briefly as she approached the door, finally turning and pressing her back against it to survey him once more with a look.

"But there's a lot of things going on in this place, Jasper. And if we're all involved, I think it might be best to learn everything you can from everyone you can contact. Including yourself. Who knows what you might find out."

And then Isobel was turning without another word and pulling the door open, seeing herself out with a wave thrown towards him over one shoulder.

EVENING PARTY/around 5:00pm.
[info]lionlike
2010-04-12 05:10 pm UTC (link)
Ben left his apartment well before 5:00 even hit, expecting the elevator to be as difficult as it usually was when he was alone. What he hadn't planned for was the extent of the stupid thing's shenanigans. It absolutely refused to take him down. It was like it had forgotten it was an elevator and the only direction it remembered was up. Ben argued and struggled with the control panel for what he assumed to be around the general area of fifteen minutes, until it finally spat him back out on the fourth floor.

If the elevator wanted to play that way, then he wouldn't indulge it. Bitterly, he made a quick trip back to his place-- long enough to abandon his cane for an ordinary pair of crutches and hit the stairs. He's had plenty of practice with stairs and crutches, so the trip thankfully took much less time than what it probably should have.

Still, by the time he arrived on the first floor, the grudge he held against the waste-of-time elevator had not faded. Even after he knocked on the doctor's(? whatever he was) door, he was still looking a tad miffed.

The knock at the door was a bit of surprise - Archer often lost track of time when immersed in his work - and caused him to jump, nearly dropping the vial in his hand. Luckily, he had practice with being surprised while on the job. Carefully securing the vial's lid, he removed his non-latex gloves and walked smoothly over to the door, checking the time as he went. The resident of #407 was probably behind that door. Grasping the knob, he turned and opened it, looking at the man.

He was clearly irritated with something, though his dependence on a pair of crutches gave Archer a small clue as to why. Not wanting to be rude, he stepped aside, gesturing into his apartment. "Thank you for coming. Take a seat." There was a small chair beside the table, just as there had been for Isobel earlier that day.

Okay. Door open. Brooding session officially over.

Ben forced his sour expression away, replacing it with a close-lipped smile for the sake of amiability. As he let himself in, he gave murmur of thanks, pausing inside the door and taking a quick look around. The place was... well, a little intimidating. Boxes, vials, tables, expensive looking equipment.

He was half tempted to ask if all of this was safe to have inside an apartment building. Then again, he almost immediately thought better of it. Rule of thumb: never offend a man surrounded by sharp or otherwise dangerous objects.

Quietly, he made his way to the only chair he saw, taking a seat as instructed and laying his crutches on the floor beside himself. "Is there a questionnaire I'm supposed to fill out, or do we just jump right on in to it?"

He shook his head, shutting the door behind them and moving to stand beside the table. "No, that won't be necessary." He pulled on a pair of non-latex gloves, arranging two vials and a sterile plastic cap - exactly as he had with Isobel. Looking over at the other man, he held up a sterile swab in a paper sleeve. "I'll open three of these and swab the inside of your cheek each time. It's a very simple procedure."

He shrugged. "Okay." Simple indeed. Perhaps the fact that he was well acquainted with doctors and medical procedures had a hand in why he appeared to be so oddly at ease with this situation. Ben was certainly familiar with anything ranging from cotton balls to needles; the only new variable in this equation was an apartment setting, rather than a glaring white office one. "Ready when you are, then."

"Alright." The young man seemed perfectly at ease, though Archer wasn't about to consider why. The "why" when it came to people was, to him, unnecessary. All that mattered to him was what was, not how that was came to be. As the man opened his mouth for the sake of science, Archer peeled apart the paper sheath and began to swab. Just like earlier in his day, he took three samples. Two were dissolved in clear vials, and one was stored.

Removing his gloves, he glanced to the young man, a very faint smile spreading across his face. "There. Very painless, wouldn't you say?" He disposed of all contaminated material, then returned to his study participant. "Do you have any questions, mister...?" This was his impersonal, awkward way of asking for his name. Of course, Archer could have simply asked, but it hadn't occurred to him.

Quick, simple, undemanding. It was all rather harmless, but he hadn't been expecting much else. The guy had explained himself well in advanced, and so far, there were no surprises. Ben watched the other put the swabs in vials, gaze moving from his hands to his face once the process was finished. "It wasn't too bad."

"I can't think of any," came after a brief pause for thought. Any question that came to mind was largely unimportant, and if Archer wanted anything futher, Ben was sure he would say so.

"--Benjamin. Whit." Actually, he did have one relevant question... "Should I call you Dr. Archer, or?"

"Pleased to meet you, Benjamin," he replied automatically. At the question, he paused, running his hand through his hair. "Just Archer will suffice." It was sterile and detached, just the way he liked to relate to people. It kept them nice and safe behind a glass fence. It was, in that way, convenient. Or as convenient as knowing other people could ever be. "Dr. Archer sounds so formal." If there were any irony in that statement, he didn't notice it in the least.

The irony was noted, and Ben almost laughed. Explaining what, exactly, he found so funny would have been awkward to explain, so he wisely kept a lid on his amusement. "All right, then, Archer." And now he couldn't help himself. He had to ask. "Is that all you wanted to take?"

"That's fine." He had more than enough to spare, after all. The sooner this fable mess got straightened out, the better. His crutches were gathered up off the floor and situated after he stood, assisting him in making his way towards the door. Ben slowed long enough to give Archer a nod and a quick hint of a smile just before passing through the doorway, answering with a final, "No problem."

Extremely painless.

Nick sent a quick message off to Hannah when he was on his way out the door. He didn't particularly like the idea of having to give some sort of sample to some guy he didn't know. Yet, it was a chance to actually see what could happen here. Perhaps he could help somehow.

He waited outside of 102, hands shoved in his pockets, for Hannah. Trying not to worry about why Boyd couldn't be there for him today.

Hannah got Nick's message a few minutes after he'd sent it, and luckily she was already dressed and only paused to pull on a pair of sneakers before heading down to the first floor. Halfway down it occurred to her that maybe she should have let this scientist know that she was coming with Nick instead of Boyd, but it was too late for that now. She didn't even know his name, either.

She smiled in greeting once she got to 102, glancing at the door. "Hi. Are you ready?"

"Hi," Nick greeted, giving her a little awkward wave. He really wishing she took longer to get there. His courage was worn pretty thin in agreeing in the first place.

"Uh, ready as I can be, I guess," he replied with a shrug. "Sorry you had to come with me. Boyd was pretty...set on me not being by myself." He was probably better off with someone there anyway. He didn't know this scientist at all.

"I'm sure it'll be fine." If it wasn't, well, that was why she was here in the first place. Boyd wouldn't have hesitated to speak up if she didn't like something, which meant that Hannah had to be willing to do the same. "Don't apologize - I don't mind. Besides, it's better to meet people you don't know in pairs."

Thinking about Boyd made her feel guilty, and she wondered if it was really a good idea to keep what she'd said a secret. Maybe someone could help her, that 601 she'd mentioned, or someone else. But right now she couldn't think about that, so instead she offered Nick a reassuring smile and knocked on the door of 102.

Once again, a knock at the door summoned a participant. Adjusting the lapel of his lab coat and fiddling with his glasses, Archer approached the door with a small sigh. After he ensured that he appeared collected and prepared - as if that were difficult to convey for him - he opened the door, looking down at two young people. At first, he was confused - why were two children coming to see him? Then, he vaguely recalled #1007's notice about a "replacement." Hopefully this replacement was less melodramatic than she.

"Hello." He stepped back, welcoming them both into his makeshift laboratory. "Welcome. I'm Dr. Archer. Thank you for coming."

Hannah was naturally wary of everyone, even if she made a point of never letting it show, and she darted a glance at this Dr. Archer as she followed Nick inside. He seemed momentarily confused, but maybe Boyd had already forewarned him, because he didn't ask what she was doing there.

"It's nice to meet you, Dr. Archer. I'm here because Boyd - in 1007 - couldn't make it." It was hard not to stare at the makeshift lab in the man's apartment, but she tried her best not to.

As the boy introduced them both, Archer nodded. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Nick and Hannah." He gestured to the only chair in the room. "Please, sit," he said while looking at Nick. For a moment, he considered going into another room to retrieve a chair for Hannah. However, they wouldn't be there for long, and frankly, he hed no reason to invite them to stay longer. And so he simply retrieved the tray labeled "001."

Nodding to both of them, he placed the tray on the edge of the bench, absently fussing with the vials. "Yes, I will retrieve my samples with swabs. It's very simple, really." After a moment, he looked to the girl. Why she felt compelled to give him #1007's name was beyond him - it's not as if they would ever speak again - but it opened up another question. "If you don't mind my asking, will you be participating as well?"

Nick went over to settle down into the chair. He tried not to fold his awkward, long limbs beneath him and looked a little nervous. He'd been around doctors too long and Archer reminded him of the worst type. The cold, clinical ones that looked at him as his diagnosis rather than his name.

"She won't be participating. She's just here with me," Nick said quickly after Archer asked. It was a little forceful for Nick, which meant there was only a mild wariness and hesitation that ran through his words. He didn't trust this guy as far as he could throw him. Especially not with Hannah.

Hannah was perfectly fine without a chair, and she stood by Nick with her hands in her pockets for a lack of anything better to do with them. Archer seemed to be very no-nonsense and all business, reminding her of some of the less likable doctors she'd seen over the years. Still, it was a far cry from a social visit.

She felt slightly bad for tagging along and just standing there, and if Nick was going to do it, well, she figured it couldn't hurt if she volunteered as well. Before she could even open her mouth to answer yes, Nick had already spoken, and she was too taken aback at his tone to argue. Hannah gave him a look, half exasperated and half grateful, before smiling apologetically at Archer. "No. Not right now, at least." It was a sort of middle ground, although she couldn't really see herself coming back on her own.

Though his face didn't show it, Archer was quite disappointed that this supposed "replacement" wasn't replacing a thing. She was just a body that was in the way, and that was such a shame. However, he nodded politely. "Alright. Forget I asked."

As the young man sat, Archer pulled on his latex-free gloves and held up a sterile swab in a paper envelope. "Now, this will be just as I described it. You'll open your mouth, and I'll brush the sterile swab within this envelope against your cheek. It's extremely simple and perfectly painless." Adjectives might make these children feel more comfortable - didn't people like adjectives?
