Nick Hollis; Peter Pan ([info]never_old) wrote in [info]bellumlogs,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:cinderella, peter pan, red riding hood

Who: Boyd and Nick and added Hannah!
What: Nick wants to help Boyd.
Where: 1007 to start
When: Immediately following this
Warnings: Crazy talk? Possible drug references? Nick may awkward you to death?

Nick hadn't really known what to tell Boyd. He had never been given much a chance to offer anyone real comfort, even Evie had rarely needed any comforting. Venturing out the door and down the stairs seemed like a feat on a good day, but talking with Boyd had picked at the corner of his brain he didn't like being awoken.

He took his Seroquel like clockwork before poking his head in to see Evie. She had her headphones on, so he didn't bother her. He'd just leave a note that he stuck on the fridge and grabbed his sketchbooks from the hospital. If they were going to talk, it was best he brought what really said all he could about the hospital.

He took the stairs to the tenth floor and looked for 1007. Fidgeting with the hem of his shirt for a moment, Nick took deep, calming breaths before he was able to knock on Boyd's door.

"Dead folks," she said easily. "Seen them ever since my momma got killed along with my daddy when I was ten. Then my grandmother when I was twelve. After Saturday they talk to me, which I guess makes some sense, what with Little Red Riding Hood," she admitted, stretching her fingers in his grasp before settling them against his again and giving him a sweet smile, then holding up her other hand.

It was exceptionally simplistic; the sort of touch adults really wouldn't think to do, but it was something she didn't have to think about. It was contact for the sake of contact, and it was easy to focus on, even through the drugs; safe.

"I would be real scared if you were my kin and you went missing like that," she admitted. "They wanna take you off to Neverland? The fairies?" she asked, adding, "they got room for one more?"

Nick held up his other hand to take hold of her other hand. He didn't mind this touch, it was comforting and simple. Reminding him more of being on the playground in elementary school than two adults sitting together talking about terrible things.

"'m sorry about the dead folks. I'd be worse than you if I saw things like that," he said with a deep sincerity, "The fairies? They did. Sometimes. Then other times it'd be for adventures. And..I wouldn't mind if you came to Neverland if I had to go. You don't even have to fight a Wendy for a spot."

She left their hands like that for a full minute, the hands on the kitchen clock ticking the seconds off loudly in the silence of the apartment. Then, carefully, she scooted forward and curled against his side. He felt different than the men she was accustomed to - much younger, much less intimidating. He didn't make her feel safe like Vlad, and he didn't want her like Daniel, and he didn't love her like Shane. But he felt warm and equal, and it was something altogether new for her.

"Being around me, it's dangerous," she offered after the extended silence, because she felt it was only right to let him know now, while he could still run away.

Nick put his arm around Boyd's shoulders and gave her a tiny squeeze, letting her stay at his side. He tried not to read the forums too much, but they had made out this redhead to be something she wasn't. In Nick's opinion, she was just as lost and lonely as too many other people.

If he could help somehow, he'd try his best.

"I don't mind," he said simply. "You're nice."

"You're too trusting," she told him, looking up at him and giving him a lazy smile. "Tell me about your brother and your sister?" she asked. Family, real family was always something she liked hearing about, and even if Jack had done wrong by Nick, he seemed to care about him. That Evie cared about him went without saying.

"You heard about Vaughn?" she asked a moment later. She didn't have a really clear idea about how much of the Vaughn saga was general knowledge, but she wanted to make sure he knew what he was getting to. See, once she made a friend, Boyd was loathe to let them go.

This was his out.

"Now you sound like Evie," he said good-naturedly. He had to think for a moment before he could answer her, "My sister plays soccer all the time. She's going to go to college and be the smartest of the family. Jack's..." he had to pause again, "He tries really hard with stuff. He's not good with me being the way I am, but I think he wants to try."

Nick shook his head to the other question. "Not a lot. People warn about her a lot?"

She reached up a hand and ran a finger over one of his arched brows as she listened, as he talked. "Why do you wanna be back in? You sound like you care about them just fine." She paused a moment, considering. "You worry about him, about Jack, if the change comes again?"

When he shook his head, she let her hand fall softly. "She's dangerous, and she likes hurting people," she explained, because she'd finally decided that had to be the goal of this, of keeping her away from people she cared about. She knew better than to think it would hurt Daniel or Rosalie, her being gone. It would hurt Shane, but even he would move on soon, she was certain. The only person who was going to hurt over this for months was her.

He ducked his head a little, letting his hair fall back in his face. "Yeah, I worry. Between hurting Jack and...Evie was too young to get why I had left. She can play pretend like I'm okay now and it's the past. I don't...I'd like to not make her remember I'm not right."

Nick frowned at that for a moment. He reached up to gently touch her cheek and said, "Yeah, but I'm Peter Pan. Can't hurt Peter Pan. He's too tricky." He gave her a flash of a smile before honestly, "Don't think she'd have much to gain from trying to hurt a crazy kid like me."

"She gets plenty out of hurting a crazy kid like me," she said truthfully, rubbing her cheek against his fingers with a trusting, soft smile and pushing the soft tendrils from his eyes again. "I hated it inside," she went on to say, voice far away and lost in memories. "When I first went in, it was a private place, and that wasn't bad. So when I went back, I expected it to be the same, but it was public and real awful." She didn't say it with any pity in her voice, but her eyes said that real awful was probably an understatement.

"And it ain't that you're not right, Nick. It's that we're different," she said softly, because it was the truth. No one who had never doubted what they saw with their own two eyes could understand; she'd figured that out a long time ago. "Is Evie Wendy?" she asked thoughtfully, even though that didn't seem quite right. Wendy and Peter weren't related, were they?

"My place was nice," he said thoughtfully, "my dad must've paid a lot for it. I don't know how, but it was quiet. I liked the quiet and I did a lot of art there."

He didn't like the thought that anything really awful could continue happening to someone like Boyd. Awful things aren't supposed to happen to good people. "Is it weird that I'd really like to draw your smile? Cause you have a nice one."

"We're different, but..there's stuff that is the same," Nick shrugged his shoulders again. He considered it for a moment before he shook is head, "Evie was someone else. Not my Wendy. I haven't found her yet.."

The mention of art made her motion to the pad he'd brought. "Show me?" she asked, then she smiled, "and then you can draw my smile."

She reached her fingers for it, even before she asked any more about Wendy or Hook or Peter, even. She assumed some of her answers might be there, in his drawings, and she was perfectly willing to be patient and wait to see if they were.

Nick picked up the well-worn drawing pad and opened it on her lap with the drawings facing her. They spanned years on white sheets -- the beginning drawings were in colored pencils. Maps of Neverland, out of proportion drawings of fairies with bright happy faces with the next page showing their faces contorting to anger.

They progressed to a young, faceless boy in flight above a surrealist landscape with a faceless girl. He flipped more pages, showing her drawings of bloody battles between drawings of done in pencil of still life. Drawings of doctors and therapists with concerned faces, then a familiar face of a shattered looking Hannah mixed in with faces of other patients.

"I had a lot of time to waste," Nick said with a lopsided grin.

The images, though surreal, did make her smile a bit. They were fanciful, the images of a boy who had at least been given the chance to dream while he was locked away. She realized then that his experience in the institution was very much like the time her grandmother had her sent there - a loving place with concerned faces and comfort-safe walls.

"Wait," she said as he turned the pages. She touched the image of Hannah, her fingers tracing the other girl's features. "Hannah," she said, looking up at him with a look that was questioning, even though there was no doubt to the girl's identity. She looked broken in the drawing, though, and it made Boyd's expression go sad and thoughtful.

"Do you know Hannah?" Nick asked Boyd. He liked talking about Hannah. She was sweet, a lot like Boyd was. He looked down at the drawing he did of her. "I knew her a little bit. They liked having us in a big group to talk. I didn't talk a lot, but I knew Hannah. She's nice."

He gently turned the pages more toward the back where Hannah appeared again, not as broken. "She got better too. Enough that they let her leave. I dunno if she knew I drew her. She reminds me a lot of you."

The comparison made her smile. "Hannah and me ain't so much alike, but you're right about her being nice. She' real sweet. She lives couple of apartments down," she explained, smiling at the happier picture. "Me and her met when things weren't going so well for either of us," she went on to tell him, "and I like her real well."

To say she felt protective over Hannah was an understatement, and that came through in her voice when she spoke about the other girl. She reached out a hand, and she touched Nick's cheek gently as he turned the pages, already feeling protective about him as well.

It seemed wrong, somehow, that a building so very dangerous had such gentle, delicate people living in it.

"No, I think you're alike," Nick was pretty set in that. "You're both really nice."

He looked over his shoulder at the door for a moment, "On this floor?" He wanted to try to visit her too. Plus, his doctor would really like he was meeting people beyond his family. Turning back to look at Boyd, smiling a little easier when she touched his cheek. "I'm glad you two know each other. I'd have tried to make you meet otherwise."

"Oh, honey," she said, her hand still on his cheek. "You can't think people are nice within a few minutes of meeting them. Not in this building." That was exactly the way Vaughn had gotten her clutches on Aaron, and it was the same way she had charmed her.

"Me and Hannah are good friends," she said, looking toward the door. "Wanna go visit her? She was talking to me on the forums just before you came over, so she's probably in her apartment. We can both go?" she suggested.

"I'm a good judge of people stuff," Nick retorted. He actually didn't know if he was a good judge of anything, but he assumed he knew what he was talking about enough. He looked worried for a moment, close to a full out fretting, "Go visit? I don't know. I shouldn't. We didn't ask if it's okay to see her.."

"You don't gotta ask friends, silly," she told him, and she uncurled her legs and tugged him to his feet, her smiled widening infectiously, almost enough to eclipse the dark circles and drugged gaze. "You in love with your Wendy?" she asked, curious now as to what tale Hannah was from.

"But manners," he protested a little. He didn't stop Boyd from pulling him up, more easily lead like a puppy than a grown man. Nick shrugged awkwardly at Boyd, "I don't know. I've never been in love."

She laughed a little at his protesting, and she stopped just long enough to kiss his cheek, before pulling him the rest of the way down the hall. She felt better than she had in days; she might even try to tell them about Vaughn, without saying the woman's name.

When she knocked on Hannah's door, she was holding onto Nick's hand. They could figure this out, right? Together?
