Who: James & Lotte
What: The bffl's make up.
Where: 501.
When: Shortly after this.
Warnings: None.

With Lotte on her way, James closed the laptop and left it buried in the snowy sheets of her bed. She kicked out of her heels, and the pair of glitter strapped spikes went skittering to one lone corner of the bedroom. Although why she was still wearing pumps when she'd been home for a solid hour, and had made the effort to change into yoga pants, was something of a mystery. She was performing a balancing act on the tiny counterspace of her modest kitchen when a knock came to the door.

"It's unlocked!" She shouted over the soft carve of her shoulder while prying loose a box of tea from the top shelf of some forgotten cabinet. James wasn't much of a tea drinker, but she remembered this fruity herbal blend as being one that Lotte was fond of. She'd bought it for just that reason, and now it was a treasure hunt to even find it after the stretch of a fight they'd had.

Being excited to head down was an understatement. The card had been easier, more chicken really, than saying in person that she was sorry. She'd been told to stop saying it so much lately, that she didn't think she'd be able to manage a conversation without it coming out.

She only stopped to grab a bag, with the can of mace and her book in it, before dashing down the stairs to the fifth floor. Her knock on the door was over-eager though she adjusted her sweatshirt while waiting for an answer.

Pushing the door open, Lotte ducked in, looking for James. The kitchen was close enough and a nervous and genuine smile spread. "Hi," she said, moving forward.

"Hi back," James murmured with a smile when she saw Lotte. The box of tea was dropped to the counter beside her bare toes before she knelt and hopped down. Now, if she could figure out how to boil water without a tea kettle. She turned to a cabinet and pulled loose two coffee mugs; garish, brightly colored things with chipped handles that read something about surviving a weekend in Vegas. She filled them with tap water and popped them in the microwave before turning back around to face Lotte. Her brows were drawn up, even teeth pinning her lower lip to one side in tense, worried contemplation.

"Should we pretend nothing happened, or beg each other's forgiveness?"

She watched James set the tea up. Knowing how James felt about tea and her usual choice in drinks, she couldn't but feel touched by there being tea. (And Lotte did feel like she needed it after the last few days.)

Lotte's hands nervously wrung in the pockets of her sweatpans and she bit her lip. "We did the apologies already," she said carefully. Taking a deep breath though, she did add in a rush, "And the worrying about you part - I still meant that. I can't just forget that. But I can worry more quietly." Again.

James' smile was a little dismissive when Lotte mentioned worrying over her, but she was touched. "You ever think that sometimes you worry too much?"

The microwave sounded off, and James turned to it readily. She was quite aware that they should just drop this subject before it got carted off into madness once again, and she was willing to let it go. James wanted Lotte to be cautious and aware, yes.. but not worried to the point of insomnia and jumping at shadows. Certainly not because of her.

She dropped a teabag in each cup and gingerly handed one off to Lotte. "Tell me about what's been going on with you. I feel in the dark." After all of the drama that had been happening, with the weekend and who knows what all else, it felt like the two of them might have been not speaking for months.

There was a tight nod from Lotte. It was the best she could hope for; in her mind it was selfish that she wanted to have James back as they were before then fighting over this. Lightning didn't strike in the same place twice, James shouldn't be hurt again? "Maybe. But it's better than being caught unaware." Again.

Taking the cup, Lotte closed her eyes and inhaled the steam for a moment. Even that was calming. "A lot," Lotte started. "I...I was looking at getting a bit further with the ballet. The person I was told to go to wasn't nice at all." Looking up she said, "I used your mace - do you want it back? I brought it with me." She'd offered last time, but it was just in case.

She moved to dunk the tea bag, before leaning against the counter. "And someone complained about me at the ballet. I'm jobless."

James felt a slight barb from Lotte's mention of being caught unaware. She still thought about it; how carelessly oblivious she'd been on the night that Ella and herself were attacked. James had always preached strength and preparation, but on that night she was without either. Her shoulders rounded slightly, and James pushed the teabag into the scalding water with her fingertip, ignoring the memory of blood and tears.

"Wai- What?" She blinked up, the storm clouds of her eyes suddenly righteous and undeniably angry. "My mace? Somebody attacked you?" A jolt of pain sang through the soft core of her heart. Why hadn't she heard about this before? Where had she been? "When? Who?"

"What happened?" She prompted stronger while taking a step nearer to Lotte, her eyes a little wide as she waited to listen. The news of Lotte losing her job at the ballet was another surprise, but it could be worried about later. After James found out if she had to go jump some sleazy bastard in vengeance.

Lotte noted the rounding in James' shoulders and winced. Misreading it as her saying the wrong thing, Lotte fumbled. "Sorry - I just have to be after the crazy day." Couldn't let him get anyone again...she shivered, as James looked up.

"I have it for you if you want?" Lotte offered before shaking her head. "Evelyn gave me the adress - I don't remember the name." She'd blocked most of it from her mind. "He didn't attack as much as...move his hands where he shouldn't. And make an offer that was awful. It was a couple of weeks ago, just after we...fought." She frowned, biting her lip again.

"Evelyn?" James wrinkled her nose at the unfamiliar name, but brushed past it to collect the other details, none of which made much sense to her either. "Wait, start at the beginning. Who's Evelyn? Why'd you go see this guy? And what did he do?"

She pulled the teabag from her mug and dropped it in the sink, gesturing for Lotte to follow her to the living room where they could talk.

"She's on the deluxe floor," Lotte said. Picking up her mug and following James, she explained, "She has connections and she said he could help me get out of the internship...higher." The silly idea of dancing outside of the ballet, on Broadway or off-Broadway seemed ridiculous now. "I rang him and we made an appointment. His offer wasn't...proper. At all."

She took a seat and with only a bit of hesitation, slipped off her shoes and sat down cross-legged. Looking up, Lotte said, "I got the mace quickly and ran."

"He wanted you to.. sleep with him?" James prompted gently with a twitch of her dark eyebrows. The way Lotte's expression screwed up at the mention of things being improper, it led James to only that one assumption.

"Does he own a dance company or something?" The idea was nothing far fetched. It would have been naive to believe or assume that people never slept around for job placement; particularly in such a cherished, high demand field.

"As long as nothing happened to you, and you're okay, I'm thankful."

Lotte nodded wordlessly. Even with James saying it like that, it felt too horrible. Shrugging her bag off, she placed it beside her, feeling the mace through it. With one hand she dug out the can, the way the bag was lying down revealing the book she left for now. Lotte held it out to her, holding it gingerly.

"Something like that. I didn't do much research as it seemed so good at the time..." Lotte shrugged. And she trusted Evelyn - and still did. She had said she'd take care of things, with the man and her lack of a job...even if nothing had happened yet. Lotte frowned for a moment, before returning the present. Managing a small, shaky smile she asked, "What about you?"

"That fucking jerk should be reported. Where's his office?" Fuming, James reached for a pen resting on one of the small, abalone shelled coffee tables. She'd been doodling through fashion magazines and Playboy during her stint of self imposed quarantine. That and trying to understand mid-afternoon soap operas. James had never realized how much she relied on work to cure her boredom before then.

With the pen uncapped, she glanced up at Lotte, waiting for some sort of phone number or address that she could ink on her hand. Her eyes dropped to the mace, and James shook her head gently. "Please keep it. I bought another."

Lotte blinked, putting the mace back in her bag. "His office?" She tried to recall it, coming up with answer faster than expected. Unsure she told James it. "I think Evelyn took care of it though - she said she would."

She took another sip of her tea, trying to think straight once more. Was it bad that she was more concerned with hearing voices that what happened weeks ago? She was touched that James seemed so concerned though - maybe later, James could connect and see this was why she had worried about her.

"I talked to Ella," Lotte said, looking up. "About things - a lot of things. I'm glad you guys were with each other."

James made an uncertain hmph sound as she penned the address Lotte mentioned onto the palm of her hand. Evelyn took care of it. James couldn't help but feel a soft clawing of jealousy at that. The answer, however, seemed to sate her and James sighed as she relaxed against the supple velvet brocade of her couch. "I'm just glad you're okay."

"You talked to Ella?" James tilted her head and took a sip of tea, waiting to see if Lotte elaborated.

Her brows narrowed in confusion, but otherwise Lotte didn't say anything else on it. A small smile and sinking further into the couch, but otherwise she was quite glad to close that subject.

"I did. She showed me her arboretum-" The word sounded too high-class in her mouth and Lotte laughed slightly, shaking her head. "She told me to stop worrying too..." And a bit of a breath. "I accidentally told her about the other girl getting involved. She said she wouldn't tell anyone though."

"She showed you her what?" James' face twisted into an expression of mild shock. Eyebrows pitched into high scripted arches, lips slightly parted. As if Lotte had just said some bad word that James wasn't familiar with. Arboretum? What the hell was that? Some kind of body piercing?

James tilted her head and considered that for a moment. Yes, she could see Ella with a garden. It seemed very natural. Somehow, that strayed James' thoughts to a wonder over whether she should install a dance pole in her living room. Her cloudy blue eyes inspected the space around them for a moment. "How's Ella doing?"

Lotte sipped her tea, thinking for a moment before saying. "Good - she seemed recovered from it all." A good thing in Lotte's mind but... "She was very caught up in all the fairy tale stuff-" Here she looked carefully at James, trying to see her reaction.

"You think it all matters, though?" James asked carefully, one of her eyebrows raising in speculation. "I mean, say we are these fairytales.. do you think that means anything? That we don't have any choice, like destiny or something?" James didn't much like the sound of all that. If they were destined to live out the patterns of their stories, where was free will?

She bit her lip, teeth meeting each other through the skin. It had to mean something, right? Otherwise she was crazy and so was Ella with her powers. And everyone else who'd experienced something on that crazy day.

And not all of it was before coming here anyway. "I think it has some influence," Lotte said. She looked down at her mug, then up at her. "And we can shut the book or leave." Which would be her plan if he came. Releasing her lip she looked up. "Do you think it's real?"

"I don't know if it's real the way everyone seems to think it is." James set her cup of tea on the coffee table and ran warm fingertips across her painted eyes. She'd thought about this far too much, and it was a subject that went absolutely nowhere.

"Saturday proved that there's definitely something wrong going on in this building. But being characters in a fable?" She made a sound of disbelief. "I don't know, I think people see the details they wanna see. I mean, not all of us match up to a storybook, do we?"

Lotte nodded - not agreement, but understanding. "We probably all think of it differently," she said, shrugging. There wasn't much they could do about that either. She'd seen how some had written it off on the forums, considering it a big joke. Or even that they were crazy.

"So something did happen to you on Saturday," Lotte said, leaning forward. She clung to that, hopefully. It was terrible of course to wish that Ella was right and James had always been a friend...or maybe an acquaintence - but maybe she lucked out, with nothing. It would put her in less danger, right? Lotte bit her lip before saying, quietly, "I do though. A book."

"Yes, on Saturday, I-- I don't know, it was all quite confusing," James offered in an obvious effort to drop the subject of herself. Curiosity drove her stormy eyes up, and she gave Lotte a quirky expression. "You have a book.. you're sure?"

Well, of course Lotte would be sure. James mused on that for a moment, trying to imagine what Lotte's fairytale or storybook might be. Although, if James was going to be honest with herself, she didn't know very much about books.

"What happened?" Lotte asked, missing the cue purposefully. "Did any of it make sense? Names or-" she trailed off. Maybe she was hoping too much.

She swallowed and nodded. "I suspected before Saturday - Ella helped with it." A pause and then she asked, "Have you heard of The Phantom of the Opera?"

"Nothing happened, I just- It's all embarrassing." She sighed, cramming the heel of one manicured hand against her eyes as if trying to remember. Like she ever could forget. "I was dressed like an idiot, and almost fainted in the goddamn stairwell. Thank God there were no witnesses- well, except Daisy.. but she had her own fashion crises going on." At the mention of The Phantom of the Opera, James glanced up.

"Of course I've heard of it, Lotte. I don't live under a rock." Despite the words, her tone was deeply curious. That was Lotte's story?

"How do you know?"

The very idea of James fainting made Lotte concerned. James was the tough one, the one who could handle anything - if she had nearly fainted, what was the world coming to? Lotte bit her lip, reaching for James wrist to pull it down from her face. "But nothing happened to you? Just the clothes and ah, nearly fainting?"

Lotte winced, immediately placating, "I didn't mean that! I just - well, everyone thinks of that musical. Instead of the book and it's so different-" She shook her head, helplessly. "Because of the similarities - and I felt like Christine on Saturday."

And then she took a breath. "And my voices- they...all seem to resemble characters from it. Raoul, the father, and...him." Even here with James she didn't feel like naming him. Lotte looked up, feeling risky in saying this. They may have talked about it before, but she still wasn't used to discussing her 'craziness'. Which might not be so crazy after all.

"No, nothing happened to me- Why, what happened to you?" Her brows knit with an element of concern. She'd read about people being attacked, being bitten, during this incident. Had something happened to Lotte?

"Wait," She blinked out of her concern with even more confusion. "There's a book?" James' knowledge of The Phantom of the Opera began and ended with Emmy Rossum. She shook her head, forgoing her ignorance for the moment and simply listening to what Lotte was telling her. Christine, voices, Raoul, the father. Something struck a chord, hadn't James said something about Christine on the night everything went nuts? She bit her lip in thought before encouraging Lotte to continue.

"Tell me about the book, who you are in it, and what it means.."

"I scared myself and...ran into someone. He didn't do anything though," Lotte said, with a bit of a smile. If she and Evie was right, that had to be the building's Cheshire Cat. "I wanted to check because of everything that happened..."

She nodded, face falling a bit. Reaching for her bag, Lotte pulled out her copy of The Phantom of the Opera and passing it to James.

"I'm...Christine." Or was Christine. The proper terminology frustrated her and Lotte gave a little sigh. "The book is the research of the author, Monsieur Leroux. He follows Raoul de Chagny who has a history with ah, Christine." Lotte paused, biting her lip. That part didn't seem to match up at all, to reality unlike the rest. "He knows her before her father dies, which...shuts off her desire to do anything with music. She does make it to the Opera Garnier eventually, at her foster mother's insistence."

It took her a moment, but then it came out as a rush. "The Phantom becomes obsessed and it's - it's just more horrific than everything. He pretends to be the Angel of Music in order to teach her, because her father promised to send him to her."

James took the book and turned it over in her hands. The title was regarded with a skeptical drop of dusky lids over stormcloud eyes. "What kind of history with Christine?" An eyebrow skewed in question, and James' attention rose to the girl across from her.

"What does The Phantom do?" Her voice dropped to a hush, not liking the foreboding element of this tale at all. She remembered quite vividly being concerned about The Phantom on that night.

Her hands moved to her lap, clasped tightly and waiting for James' reaction. "They spent the summers together," Lotte said, eyes falling to the book, fidgetting slightly. "He's a Vicompte and her father is a musician. They don't do anything about romance or anything, because they think it's impossible..."

Even if Raoul was awkward - talking about something she was sure about, if nothing else - the Phantom, Erik, wasn't. Lotte pressed her lips together for a moment, before saying, "He..well he says he's in love with her." She wasn't entirely sure about that, even if his voice had pleaded like it had. Even if he let Christine go. "And he forbids her from talking to Raoul, otherwise he would leave. Throughout all this he tries to get money from the managers of the opera who change-" Lotte looked up, trying a smile. "It's the funny part of the book. He outsmarts them throughout and it's a nice break from everything else."

And she was avoiding it. "But he eventually drops a chandelier on the audience of the opera. Christine doesn't know it and she goes to make sure he's alright...and he takes her to his house in a lake under the opera. She doesn't realize he's more than a voice until then."

James listened quietly to Lotte's rendition of the story, trying to imagine how the pieces of her real life fit into it all. After flipping through the book, she leaned to place it upon the coffee table in exchange for her tea, which had gone lukewarm. She took a sip and mused as silence fell between them, considering something for a long moment before moving to speak.

Lotte had given up on her tea, though she still held the faintly warm cup in one hand. She moved to place it on the table, where it was less likely to be spilled. She looked up to James, before nodding.

"They match up - it's too much. As for hearing..." Lotte bit her lip for a moment, before nodding again. "I heard him after I lost my job. I took the last of the pills and I was fine until Saturday. It triggered them again and...it was worse, because I knew it was Erik." Those made sense, more than the last 'visit' from it.

She paused for a moment before shrugging, "And Sunday. But that was almost like before...except he left, once I sang for him again." She shook her head.

"Do you think it will stop if you-" There was a hesitation then, but James rolled her shoulders back and looked Lotte squarely in the eyes when she continued, "if you just take your pills. You said it continued on Saturday after you took the last of them, maybe- Well, have you not been taking them regularly?" James wasn't insinuating that the voices were a figment of Lotte's imagination, but the voices had been a presence in Lotte's life long before they'd moved into this building.

"I ran out," Lotte said quietly. And of course Valerie wasn't speaking to her, which meant she couldn't ask her if she'd get the prescription refilled. Lotte wasn't even sure if she had the form. She didn't want to go in for analysis or for a new diagnosis. "And - I'm usually prepared. It's only been when I've been really stressed..." Like sixth grade. "You don't have a doctor in the city, do you? I can ask around or- I think there might be a doctor in the building.." James added as an afterthought. Although, she wouldn't blame Lotte if she wanted to keep her mental health interests out of the building. This place was a gossip whirlwind.

For a brief moment it crossed Lotte's mind as an odd thing to say, but she pushed it aside. After the last few weeks she was just greatful to have James back, as her friend again - not terrified that something would have happend to her while fighting.
