At first he didn't know what he was supposed to do as she came so near, retreat or stay put. He took one uncertain step backward, but the majority of his bulk didn't move; he just blinked at her uncertainly. When she sank down, he sat too, back straight, overlarge paws pulled in front of him. The thick animal musk of warm fur was unavoidable, especially when he tilted his head to the side and the shaggy mane shifted. "You don't have to be scared," he said, lifting his nose to look up at her hand as it came near. "It's safe here." Of that, at least, he was absolutely certain.
