The moment he went into the chute, she ran out and watched him fall, because she just had to enjoy the fruits of her labor. She shrieked with happy delight when he splashed into the pool, and then she slipped off her dress and grabbed someone else's clothes from a dryer - a man's shirt and sweatpants, which smelled of cigars and male - and she ran out of the laundry room, her dress fisted in her hand. She ran to the second floor, then she rubbed the dress along the elevator door before throwing it inside, pressing all the buttons and running off as the door closed. Hopefully, she thought, that would confuse him on each floor.
She kept running until she reached the sixth floor, where she opened Shane's apartment (with a key she'd stowed above the door) and proceeded to climb onto the fire escape.
