Jack did a double take before he realized the girl standing in front of him was his sister. "H-hey," he stammered, straightening, and he gave Evie a crooked grin. "I missed you," he lied. He didn't know if he should try to hug her or not so he kept a good bit of space between them.
"Where've you been?" It came out a bit grouchy -- meaner than he intended -- and Jack tried to soften his voice. "It's just -- it's late, you know. Isn't school over at 3?"
