Who: Boyd and Shane
What: Talking! Lots of fun!
Where: Outside Cosa Nostra
When: After this and this.
Warnings: TBA

Shane had come home to talk to Boyd, determined to tell her what had happened and just hope she wouldn't be too upset. They needed to talk regardless.

But when he got there, she was gone, with only a note left behind. Gone to see Daniel with Rosalie.

Insult to injury. He felt too spent to really be upset. At least she'd left him a note, he supposed. At least Rosalie was there, and she hadn't gone to see him alone, where ever he'd gone to hide.

If she was off visiting Daniel, he assumed she'd go straight to her shift at the club afterward. So he waited, smoking by the window, listening to music, and not really getting any productive thinking done because the urge to call her or find out where she'd gone was so strong. No, that wouldn't do any good. Better to wait, just talk to her in person.

He walked down to the club when it was around the time she usually got off her shift, and he waited for her to come out.

She had changed back into the sweats and hoodie from the night before, having borrowed a dress from one of the girls at the club for her shift, and she stepped out into the night cold.

She'd actually spent most of the night in the backroom with Mikey and the Dean of NYU's School of Education, and they'd agreed that she would audit classes for the remainder of the semester. Her grades from high school were actually fairly solid, so Mikey hadn't had to pull as many strings as anticipated.

By the time she saw Shane, she'd taken a few steps outside, and she took a deep and steadying breath. She'd been thinking about this talk for days now. It was time to have it over with.

She walked up to him, and she stretched up on tiptoes and kissed his cheek. "Hey there, sugar. Come to walk a girl home?"

"Yeah," he said, smiling faintly. Despite everything, it was still a lift to see her, get that kiss. "How was work?"

"I spent most of it talking to Mikey about school," she told him, walking slowly so he'd fall into step beside her. "I been thinking a lot about things, Shane," she said, and the words tumbled fast because she wanted to say this all before he stopped her. "Vaughn attacking me, it made us rush into this thing, you and me. We weren't ready for it, and you gotta figure out how to control your killings without using my body for it. I hurt, Shane, and I'm so tired," she said, risking a glance over at him. "I wanna move back to my place, and I want you to fix you, and I want to figure out what I want, and I want to learn who you are inside."

She stopped walking, looked up at him. "I love you. I don't want you thinking I don't. But I need to sort things, and I need to figure out who I am, 'cause it ain't who I was before."

"I've changed."

He stopped walking as well, and listened to what she had to say.

He should have expected this, seen it coming. The fact that he should have didn't mean he had, and it didn't make what she was saying hurt less, despite the fact that he could recognize how much of it was true.

He was feeling so many things at once, and, as usual, he had no idea how to articulate them. Whatever was going on internally flashed through his eyes and then went away. Shutdown Shane.

"You stay in 601," he said. "I'll go somewhere. I couldn't--it's all your things, Boyd. I don't think I can stay there right now. I'll get my things when we get back, and I'll find somewhere else to stay."

She put her fingers over his mouth. "No. I want my apartment, and my things. I'll call to get your apartment cleared out in the morning, Shane. Don't fight me on this, 'cause I just wanna go home and go to sleep right now," she said honestly. "And quit hiding things from me like that. If we want this to ever work, you gotta stop that. You gotta find a way, sugar," She said.

She leaned up on tiptoes again, and she kissed his cheek, slow this time, lingering. "I'm gonna take a cab home, and you're gonna go get some sleep. Day after tomorrow, you and me, we're gonna have breakfast. You can treat a girl."

She took a step back, and she put her arm out for a cab, ignoring the throbbing in her hand. She'd take care of it when she got home. She didn't want him feeling guilty, not now, not on top of this.

A cab stopped, and she hesitated a moment before hugging him achingly tight. "Night, sugar," she said softly, before slipping away and into the cab.

She watched him until he was out of sight.

He watched Boyd leave.

Well. That, it seemed, was that.

There was a tightness in his chest. This, he assumed, was the sensation that a normal person would probably attempt to alleviate by shouting, or crying, or breaking something. He, of course, had his own methods. He didn't do any of those things, nor did he go home. He resolved to walk all night, or until something felt better. Probably all night. At least by the morning, Boyd's things wouldn't be there to face him when he went home.
