Ella heard, rather than saw, the other man smash James into the wall again, this time with a sickening thud.

Her cheeks were wet, and she was crying now, a sobbing begging driven by the fear that had finally caught up with her. And when the men backed up, repeating their warning, her knees buckled and she sank to the dirty alleyway ground.

A fisted hand in her hair pulled her to her feet, and she was tossed at James a moment later. She grabbed onto the other woman, the fear immediately visible in her eyes.

Let them leave. Let them go.

"Please," whispered.
