"You do? Well, in that case, I'll do my best to not feel so guilty. I wouldn't want you to go out of your way or anything." He knew he'd probably still feel bad - it was instinctive - but the last thing he wanted was for her to feel obligated. Then again, he wasn't sure if he should be encouraging her to cook for him in the first place.
He watched her carefully, trying to judge whether she was being honest or just saying everything was fine for his sake - but he was satisfied that she was telling the truth, and he couldn't help but feel relieved. His life was enough of a mess - he was glad hers wasn't. "Good. I'm glad she's doing better - and that you're okay. Considering what's been going on," he added quickly.
How he was doing was a whole other question. Cole shrugged. "Good. I'm good. Just... trying to make some progress, I guess, but it's been hard to find anything out so far."
