Ella nodded. She didn't add that Vaughn already believed that Daniel belonged to her, because it wouldn't change anything. And despite the fact that she wanted to ask if Vaughn had scared off Jane and Piper and Ain (who she believed to be women from Daniel's past), she didn't do that either, because she was trying not to pry.
"My hatred of Heller grows daily," she said quietly. "It's a Catch-22, you see. If we don't tell him, we'll be lying to him every time we speak to him, and once he finds out he'll hate us for the lie. If we tell him, he'll shut us out for our own good. Either way, we lose him. Either way, she wins," she said, knowing it sounded selfish even as she said it. She shook her head a little, sadly. "That sounds terribly selfish, doesn't it?"
