We've endured so long as a species because we have a fierce instinct for self-preservation and selfishness; it's insurmountable, really. We don't do things out of need; we do them out of excess and gluttony, and nothing else can match us for that.
Americans and sexuality, that one is harder. It could be religious, or it could be that we're simply uncomfortable baring ourselves in any meaningful way; that we cherish our control. Sex is, by its very nature, uncontrolled vulnerability. It makes people uncomfortable. It's all about flaws and imperfections and most people don't see the beauty in those things, I find.
