A shoebox is left right beside the door to apartment 307. It's held closed by three thick strips of clear packing tape that encircle its width on each and and the center. "For Aiden" is written in green marker on a piece of paper taped to the top of the box.
Inside the box are three things:
- Enough shredded newspaper to make the whole thing seem like a joke.
- A note written on blank computer paper, folded into fourths, and taped to:
- A folded knife. When extended, the blade is just over four inches long. The blade is extremely sharp and smooth, with no serrations. Should it be used on a piece of paper, the paper would shred perfectly and cleanly.
The note is written in semi-sloppy handwriting that is quite legible, probably because it's clear that effort has been taken for it to be so. It reads:
Here it is. You press on that circular part to unlock the locking mechanism to either extend or retract the blade. There's a slight dip on the top of the blade (the non-sharp side) where you can dig your nails under to help you flip it open one-handed. It might take some practice, but it gets easy after a while. I made sure it was loose enough to open easily, but not so much that it can swing around and cut you when it's supposed to be locked.
Countless soda cans sacrificed themselves for this knife. Many pieces of foam died bravely in battle against this knife's horrendous predecessors. Do not let their passing be in vain.
