It was too much. James had prepared himself for torture and direct attack, he had prepared to hold in all of his fury over the long haul of the school year, he had been prepared to fight Sirius to make sure his best mate did the same, if necessary. He had expected they might undergo all sorts of trials he could barely conceive of while here at the castle, especially since Dark Arts had been added to the curriculum. He had not considered the possibility that the other side might take one of them out of the castle; he'd been too busy worrying about being trapped inside. Fucking brilliant job of thinking ahead.
Added to his worry about Remus was the fact that he'd failed to turn in two of his assignments today, since he'd been unable to concentrate on them last night. Which meant he'd had a taste of what the new punishments were, around here. Apparently, in Dark Arts class, not turning in an assignment meant that you became the new test subject for a bit. It wasn't even the pain that bothered him, but the sheer injustice of it.
And after classes were done, he still hadn't heard a damn thing from the Order. Lily's insistence that he try to work with them had pissed him off immensely, and he hated it even more for the fact that he was angry at Lily of all people, especially when he knew she was being the logical rational one.
He didn't bloody well care anymore. He had been toying with ideas all day, and he needed to get the hell out of this castle. Carrying everything he could think of that he might possibly need, he set about heavily booby-trapping and warding their dormitory room, then left it under the Invisibility Cloak, heading for the Owlery. There he waited, knowing that Sirius had the Map, that he would be able to see James's dot up here even if he couldn't see him.
This was a stupid idea. It was bound to fail. Rubbing his arms to get rid of the tingles left by the Cruciatus Curse, James couldn't even bring himself to care. At the very least, he was going to try.
