James was exceedingly grateful for the way Lily always seemed to be able to make him smile, for the way all of their problems seemed smaller when they were alone. Her company was a safe haven for him, and a source of strength; she was a good influence on him, too. He had been significantly more reckless at the start of the summer, ready to jump in and pick a fight with any Death Eater he could, on the off chance of finding the Order. She hadn't helped him find the Order, nor influenced his beliefs in right and wrong, but her brand of morality and logic had amazed him once he'd begun to understand it better. Thinking about it now, there was something akin to awe in his eyes as he looked at her, joining her on the sofa.
"It's funny," he said, emphasizing and interrupting himself to kiss her, his hands framing her face. "At the beginning of the summer, I had plans to impress you once we got back to Hogwarts, if I didn't manage it over the hols. Getting valiantly injured defending first years or Muggleborns, and so on. Just well I won you over before then, yeah?"
If she hadn't decided not to come back to Hogwarts already, he thought that decision would have been made for her now. What would they do if a Muggleborn refused to register, and yet tried to go to school? Nothing good, he was sure. "I'm going to sneak out of the castle to see you, you know. So when you think about what you want to do before August, don't feel like you're not going to see me again for months."
